Just to confirm...

My rig was professionally converted when it was new for NC Highway Patrol as a mobile breathalyzer unit.

Getting insurance has been a nightmare.
I thought maybe the bus being titled as an
"HC" house car was the issue and called the DMV to inquire about getting it retitled as an RV. The inspector assured me that HC is the same as RV and everything is good as far as they are concerned.

He sounded like he knew what he was talking about and even put me on hold to confirm.

Can anyone with a NC bus conversion that has been re-titled, tell me definitively that their title also says HC?

TIA

Can they not simply change it to "RV", or is "HC" the designation your state uses?

That's what I was hoping for so I get get full coverage insurance for 1/4 of what I'm paying for just liability. But, no he said HC is exactly what it's supposed to be.

My insurance agent kind of blew everything out of proportion! So... that certainly didn't help!

If your state has a designation of "RV" or "MH" then you need to appeal.

One guy's view of "what it is supposed to be" is not the law. You are entitled to a designation that fits.

Visit a local RV sales site and ask them how their vehicles are titled.

I have not re-titled as an RV. I am titled as a bus for private use.
And everything that I have found is that it is one or the other and there is no house car thing.
Another member here ended up having to go through or at least involve my nationwide agent instead of his local one.
If you want to try that then let me know and I will get you the info.

I thought hous-car is a term used in california.. I know ive seen that term used on this forum before.. but ultimately in some states you need to have it as a Bus to get commerciasl insurance for personal; use.. then re-title it as an RV or MH or HC (whatever your state calls a motor home) to get RV insurance through an RV insurance provider
