Montana registration/Requirements for travel

OKAY FRIENDS
So, I finally found a bus... I made a deposit on it today, and will be picking it up in a month or so here.
Some info on it, its a mechanical dt466, new transmission was put in, good rubber on the tires, and set to make a solid cross country trip according to the guy selling it. He was impressed i knew my stuff on the motor, and i referred to the forums and the rareity of the engine and drive train for the price. Hes convinced it was a 6000 dollar bus but the owner is ready to let it go since he has a few extras... yeah. Im excited

So, my question is, Ill be purchasing and registering it in montana. I dont have a CDL, and will be pulling the seats out once im back in the midwest. What do I need to obtain to drive it legally?

Ive heard that if its not hauling passengers just put an out of service sign and paint the school bus logos over and its good to go?

Maybe big skyPC can weigh in on this? let me know friends...

Thanks! Caleb.

Just drive it home with insurance, BOS and a signed title. You have to drive like an idiot to get pulled over in a bus.

Tell us more about the bus? Year, mileage, cost, etc.

I would at least cover up the signage if possible.

I think I would want as little as possible showing it is in private use. With the signage , it's just another bus on the road. If you're real lucky they left the old plates on it.

They accept offers, offer them $2500 if it doesn't have an AT545

So just talked to the guy. It does have a dent up there. No leak damage, said it’s probably fixable through the latch. He was just under the bus. Has a rebuilt 545 trans in it with less than 10k on it.

Thoughts?

He also said they’d sell it with a temp sticker for good for 40 days and no cdl required. So that’s all good music I guess.

Temp sticker (meaning inspection) or plate? If it comes with a temp plate, then that does make it a lot easier.

Yeah that’s what I’m guessing. Probably a temporary plate. I can register it in Montana but once the time comes I’d like to switch it either to Rv or a non commercial title.

Montana "Motor Home" criteria.

(42) "Motor home" means a motor vehicle:
(a) designed to provide temporary living quarters, built as an integral part of or permanently attached to a self-propelled motor vehicle chassis or van;
(b) containing permanently installed independent life support systems that meet the NFPA 1192 standard on recreational vehicles; and
(c) providing at least four of the following types of facilities:
(i) cooking, refrigeration, or icebox;
(ii) self-contained toilet;
(iii) heating or air conditioning, or both;
(iv) potable water supply, including a faucet and sink; or
(v) separate 110-volt or 125-volt electrical power supply or a liquefied petroleum gas supply, or both.

Apparently while not necessarily applying to owner conversions, the MT code also references standards ANSI/A119.2 & NFPA 1192 .
