Progressive insurance

So I contacted my agent again after being denied coverage from Progressive and asked how so many others are getting new policies through them, yet you tell me they are not writing new policies. Here's was the reply I got this morning:

"Marc

I spent around 40 minutes this morning on the phone with several levels of admin with Progressive about the converted bus/RV policies.

On the product guide tab, the attached was presented to me by a senior level admin person with Progressive. They are adamant they don’t want this type of business.

For everyone on your forum, if they write a policy online… they may not understand what their purchasing, that’s why we recommend purchasing from an Agent.

Please let me know if you have any questions. I really wish that we could continue the coverage with Progressive. There has to be a insurance company out there that will accept these units. I’m sure the premiums will be much different though. I will ask around on our IA websites for folks who may have another option available.

Regarding the attached doc: I included examples of what Progressive considers acceptable risks and a list for the unacceptable risks."

The PDF was too large to link. But it says :
UNACCEPTABLE RV's
1) School or Transit buses (whether converted or not)
2) Conversion Vans (whether converted or not)
3) RV's without the proper facilities.
4) RV's principally stored/garaged in Canada, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Mexico, or Puerto Rico.
5)Travel trailers garaged in Massachusetts
6) Vehicles owned or leased by ...........

Marc, you always get me thinking about insurance. I "had" a commercial for commercial use policy through progressive and my miserable plumbing and heating business that I got to bring her back from Oregon. It was the only thing I could get on short notice before I flew out the next day.

Originally the policy was $917/year, but increased to a little over $1100/year without notice 2 months in.

I just got off the phone with AIS (National General) and they bound a commercial for private use policy for me @$288/year.

I was completely honest about the bus, its use, current state, and title status.

No seats, no wheelchair lift, limited long distance driving, titled as motorhome, ect.

They were a breeze to work with and I will be calling back in a year to hopefully convert it to a RV policy.

They require photographic evidence of the following for a RV policy:

1. Permanent Sleeping quarters

2. Permanent Cooking facilities

3. Permanent Bathroom facilities

...........[/QUOTE]

Through AIS, Progressive insured my bus with a commercial for private use policy. I was very clear that it was a school bus. The minute I start modification it sets it to cancel.

The mention of conversion vans make me wonder if that includes those Sprinter Winnebagos. I bet those are OK :/

I actually started with their RV division, who said they would not cover it until the conversion was complete, they transferred me to the commercial division.

I told them it was a conversion in progress and there was no issues.

They were only concerned that I would cancel within 3 months, which I will not be doing.

What state does the bus reside?

Availability and cost of insurance will vary considerably depending on where the vehicle is "garaged".

Progressive says buses are unacceptable for "RV" coverage, doesn't say "in some states". For an unconverted bus they may insure as a commercial policy.

Then I would suggest calling another carrier but do keep in mind that Availability and cost of insurance will vary considerably depending on where the vehicle is "garaged".

It’s all very confusing isn’t it? There’s a lot of conflicting information amongst us and even company representatives.

Willie says:

“I told them it was a conversion in progress and there was no issues.”

There’s also conflicting info on their official site, like the info you found about school buses “converted or not” since I have a Progressive policy.

I couldn't manage to get RV insurance. I've settled for Progressive insuring it as a cargo van, commercial for personal use.

I questioned how my policy got through when they specifically forbid this process.

According to Progressive, this one slipped through the cracks somehow. I don’t think it was reviewed by an underwriter until I started inquiring about the policy when you were looking to purchase another unit or a possible vehicle change(the best I can remember).

Yes, you have coverage until the policy expiration date. The policy has been set up for non-renewal in Sept..

We are part of an IA group where can communicate with other independent agents throughout the country… we have put out a request to see what everyone else doing about units like yours. I will let you know what I find out.

I'm sorry you've had some issues with Progressive but I'm able to buy Progressive commercial policy for buses if I want or need to.
They've been very clear about not wanting to write RV policies for converted school buses for several years at least.

They forbid buses, yes, but its only in the context of an RV policy. Their commercial policy will work for the pre-conversion coverage for many folks depending on their location.

We’ve had this conversation before and at that time I called the agent at AIS who sold me my policy. She says they write commercial policies all the time for former school buses. As soon as any modification is done, the policy is void. It must be a bit of a cash cow Knowing that most of us are going to drive it home and get on with it.

Sucks. I really want to paint my bus, but also want to install underbody tool boxes beforehand. Is that a modification?

Don't be sorry for me, I have have never had an issue getting insured or registered. The rest of your statement backs up what I said previously.

Getting commercial insurance seems to be quite easy, but that's not the kind of coverage we are looking for.
