State of Georgia Changing from Bus to RV??????
I just purchased an out of state Short International School Bus. I have spent two days on the phone with Local County Tax Office and State Dept of Motor Vehicles. None of these IDIOTS can tell me have to change Class of Vehicle from Passenger Bus to RV. One person at State DMV said just take it to any Ga. State Patrol Post and the will inspect the RV and give you the Paper Work to take to your local tag OFFICE. I called the GSP Post in Forsyth Ga. they said they had never heard of that and just laughed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I read the post about Vermont but I know this can be done in Georgia just don't know how.
Thanks
Jim

Being a fellow Georgian, and having done some of this myself, you don't change the *TITLE*. You simply *Register* it as an RV (in all fairness, I haven't gotten this far yet). An inspection should not be necessary as far as the title goes.

I'm in Gainesville.
My bill of sale said motor home, my title said rv. The lady asked if it was a motor home & the gvwr. She titled it as a motor home.
If its a short bus I'd suggest getting it titled as a extended van or very similar. Insurance in GA is a bear on a rv or equivalent UNLESS it was professionally done.

I have no hassles by just leaving it "BU" on the title. I have it tagged, titled, and insured as my personal vehicle. Both buses, actually.
I'm not in GA, but I remember someone from there telling me that GA is a PITA when it comes to all that stuff.

I had to get commercial insurance too. But it was only $350 a year.
My Blue Bird WAS 27500 also but I honesty thought she asked me how much it weighted & not GVWR. I told her 18500. I was just guessing the weight. Turns out it is actually 15500.

What insurance company did you get to write it. Did you go through a RV Underwriter.

You will need a power bill or a AL drivers license.
Or maybe a friend?

I would guess it would be almost impossible to do that remotely. Like I said, if you have a friend maybe you can get them to do the running around? I believe you can remotely title vehicles in South Dakota - I know they have titled and tagged quite a few of my buddies motorcycles remotely (none of my friends live in SD) as these are guys that want to tag 2-stroke dirt bikes(impossible in almost all state but SD.
So I think there are ways around all your issues, but you may have to "move" to Alabama? : :

Hi dredman,
What were the requirements to get it tagged in Alabama? Did any specific renovations have to be done first? Did it have to be painted? Did you have insurance prior to getting it tagged and re-titled as RV?
Thanks for the help!
