Texas Insurance
I'm new to the Skoolie world and super excited to get started on my bus! But, every insurance company I could find has turned me down. Are there some companies that will insure a school bus conversion in Texas?
Thanks!

I'm in Texas as well but have not insured my bus yet. I'm hearing a lot of folks having good luck with a company called National General. I also believe Good Sam Club has insurance contacts as well. Good Luck.

This is what you have to do... I just did it myself. The first time you get insurance go through a private broker, get a commercial policy and tell them you will not be hauling passengers. It cost me 350 for a six month policy. After you get your insurance you have to weigh it at a certified scale, then get it inspected. When all of that is done you can go down and register it as a "passenger vehicle over 6000 lbs." now it is registered just like a motor Home. I took the VIN and title to my regular insurer and they just gave me liability for one year at 125 dollars a year! Couldn't believe it!

Quick update, my bus isn't finished yet, but when it is, National General will insure it as an RV in Texas!

I went through Texas Farm Bureau. For $400 a year I got 100,000/300.000 in bodily ins 100,000 in property ins and 30,000/60,000 uninsured motorists.
I went to their office to talk to an agent in person.

Is that as a converted bus or just as a bus?

We went through State Farm. If you're near Katy, TX there's a really good agent they have that insured us for almost 12 years without even a hitch on any of our odd-ball vehicles: an M1031, 3 M1009's, the 1988 Ford B600, and HF our 1989 Thomas. PM me if you would like his information.

For a second I thought ECCB was back but then realized the date of that post.
Journey, ECCB got banned after that post, so don't wait for an answer from him. Call any independent insurance agent and ask for a non commercial use policy, likely they will end up at Progressive.

Hi o1marc!
Thank you for your post! I ended up with Allstate after it was suggested to me in another forum. $12 per month for liability which is all that we need right now since it will be sitting in an RV/Boat storage most of the time and is in pre-conversion status.
We called Progressive (apparently they no longer offer this type of coverage?), Farmers, 2 State farm agents, AIS, Farm Bureau, a private broker that never called us back ...finally we were given the name of an Allstate agent who got us set up in just a few minutes. Super easy and cheap. As long as we are legal to get the bus from the storage to our mechanic, weigh station, and short trips to get things done on it I am happy. He told us that once the bus is finished we can add additional coverage to it.

having a miserable time getting insurance in Texas
I used to insure through USAA for my last RV, but apparently they don't offer that any longer. Called progressive 3 times before giving up, they wouldn't even insure it under a commercial policy. 1964 Greyhound 4106.
If someone has an agent near the Dallas area I would love to work with someone local. I need the policy soon, I need to drive from Phoenix to Dallas and I don't want to be un-insured for the trip.
Thanks for any suggestions,
-Ian

Anyone have any new info. So we can get insurance before conversion in texas? I just need liability to drive during conversion.
I'll call the DMV and see what i gotta do for registration. Id rather just call it a passenger vehicle and treat it like a normal van. (Short bus)
