Typical Insurance Costs
As a single guy, all this skoolie life sounds great, BUT! i called about insurance and spoke to a man who was super cool about it, ready to help me get a bus on the road and my question is this,,, what is a general/normal/average/reasonable cost for insurance per year/and payments monthly?
I was told: that to drive a school bus as a personal vehicle with no conversion and seats removed it falls under a personal vehicle with a normal tag and under a personal commercial policy. Typically which runs $ 1,200-1,600 and that's cheap. Anyone around Orlando/central FL have thoughts on this or anyone else I can call in the area to compare? Of course the man said it would depend on somethings, like year, rather or not it has a WC lift or not ... Anyone care to share their general prices to keep a bus on the road, this is about all I know when it comes to this subject. I am in Daytona Beach FL. and learning to prepare. This just kinda sounded high to me. All of a sudden, it sounds like between insurance on the bus and a seperate policy on my car, since its not a "commercial car" (lol) this sounds like I won't be saving or anything. Or am I looking at this wrong.. Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

I know it varies by location, but Progressive only charged me $260 for a 12-month policy on an unconverted bus for personal use.

If you're under 25, that could explain your high quotes.
I'm nearly 40, no tickets or points, and mine is still 900+ per year. I'm 20 miles north of Orlando, roughly.

Mine is roughly twice that and I'm in Indiana.

Mine was $400 the first year and dropped to $300 per year since. It seems like it has a lot to do with location, then there is the age thing and driving records. It seems unreasonable.

If it is titled and insured as an RV, it should be less than $500 a year for liability.

I'm not seeing a typical insurance cost. We're all over the board.
It looks like some of you made your insurance agents angry.

Reasonable costs
Hi, yeah, but these are giving me and hopefully others something to think about. One thing i might mention and probably should have,, I am not converting it. I am only stripping the seats out and laying carpet and using it for personal use really. Just new to owning a bus. It would be used more as a personal vehicle for work.

That's how mine is, registered as a van. I'm thinking more like a conversion van, a big one.
No plumbing, no mounted waste tanks, no permanent electrical system (yet). I'm trying not to cross that line toward being an RV.

I'm 54, clean driving record, in NC, 2003 Thomas bus is titled as an "HC", it was professionally converted as a mobile breathalyzer unit for the NC State Highway Patrol...my agent called 3 companies before he found one that would write a policy.
Commercial policy for personal use, liability only, $1000 per year!! I HAVE to find something better than that... and I need full coverage...

Update:
after buying $1,000 liability only policy, driving my bus home...
got no response from Good Sam from emailing (3 times)
I called them and within minutes had a liability only policy for $100 per year.
The bad news; my insurance agent knew that I was still looking for full coverage (still haven't found that) and still looking for cheaper liability coverage but didn't bother to tell me that I'd be paying a 30% penalty for cancelling early. So, it cost me $340 for insurance to drive my bus 70 miles.
Pretty sure my insurance agent just lost my business...

I urge you to use services if American Insurance. It's the most reliable and affordable option.

Hi- So like what did you have to do to convert it? Like did you have to install plumbing, electric, gas, stove, bathroom, curtains, a sofa, bed? What was Allstate's requirements and did they have to have receipts or anything? Do you have a van or bus?

How can I get a bus considered to be a Van conversion or is that a length thing? Don't they see it is a bus from the Vin#?
