Loved this area! Been quite a while since I've been there, but it was so peaceful when I really needed it.
There is also a huge National Forest in Arkansas that I'd love to explore.

i was working on a weekend get together at a local state park in the jefferson national forest in the south west corner of va. on a fri and sat night. electric, water and internet. no cost in exchange for 4 hours volunteering , picking up trash maintenance stuff. i was thinking in april. lots of thru hikers in the area at that time. (appalachian trail) good time to cook a hog!

Hmm! The middle of OK is not what my East Coast mindset would have picked as halfway, but the numbers aren't lying - 1375 miles from my place in Silver Spring MD and 1550 from my place in Keene NH. I was looking at the middle of NE or KS as a halfway point, and that's due south. Works for me!
I've been to Jefferson Forest in sw VA as a Boy Scout. Nice! but I love anything in the Appalachian/Great Smokies.

yeah, but as a KS resident I can safely say that nobody wants to meet up there... nothing but flat dusty land and high winds...

Works for me as long as it isn't held during tornado season.
Toto doesn't want to go back there again.

Yeah Tango, that's why I suggested either spring or fall as good times to meet there. Tornado season begins in June and goes through September. I'm thinking either late April/early May in the spring or Thanksgiving Break for fall. Those times would be good for demonstrating off-grind living and the values of proper insulation among other things.
BTW, Tango, you actually FOUND Toto?!?!?!?! Last time I saw that dog was at 3,000 feet going about 150 mph out of the vortex............. Kansas can be brutal. Heck, so can Illinois and Indiana for that matter (having lived in those states for more than half my life).......

Actually, Toto came down in a deep snow drift in the old Czech Republic. It cost us $100 in Korunas, some AK-47 parts and a new I-Phone and postage to get him shipped back.

WOW, never knew Toto was such the international traveler! I never guessed that "global warming" and "ozone distortion" have had such an impact upon such a simple tornado from the '30's..... Dorothy must be wondering where the pooch went to as well....... I guess I got a little
Now back to our fearless leader Dred and his decisions about where and when we're going to meet.......
Sorry Dred.......

Another idea that we could attempt to schedule annually is two seperate locations a left coast right coast thing? I am from texas but live in n.c. And can only move at 49 mph so a long trip is out of question for me but in my area I have a field available (through a friend that are more naturalist, hippy, good people) that can handle 20-30 spread out comfortably . No hook ups but water fill is available and at the end a form of a dump station could be (if I prepped) existing 30 dog kennel in operation on septic with available clean out to dump into. Or there is a state park we put my bus at every year for a week or so with water available a dump station, full bathroom's and on the water $17 a night. There are several other state rustic sites that are only 5$ a night with nothing but a site with lantern hook, fire ring and outhouse.
The company I used to work for I had 3-weeks vaca a year closed the doors at Christmas and now I have none until 2-years in with my new job. These sites I am offering for the right coast allow me to park and work during the day.
Not trying to sound selfish and I think this is a great idea and would love to meet other skoolie. Maybe we can schedule 2 seperate meet up 's at the same time frame that way the skoolie s that can't make it to Kansas,Arkansas or wherever on that side of town can agree to a spot on this side of town and we can share stories and pic's after

Elkhart, IN has lots of salvage places to prowl around in and find things to finish your build. There is also the RV museum. There are couple of bus friendly campgrounds as well as the Elkhart county fairgrounds.

I can't yet say for sure if we'd be able to make it to this event, but if it were in Elkhart it'd be much more likely! I'll put a vote in for RV salvage yard pickin', too.
Hell, let's make it a proper swap meet! Anyone have a 6+1 Spicer or (even better) a RoadRanger sitting in their backyard?
