cannonball run.......sort of

I've recently decided that it would be a lot of fun to race from coast to coast across this great country. The problem is that I can't seem to find any good info on such a race. Canada has a similar upcoming event, but the entrance fee is $8,000 canadian. That seems like an excessive amount of money to pay just to participate in a road trip.

I was looking at the original cannonball run. (197?) The average speed of the fastest competitor was only 86mph. I don't want to be the fastest guy, i just thought the idea of such a race seemed intruiging.

Anyone have info on a similiar race here in the US?

MTV recently showed an episode of True Life on a race like that:

The race that they followed is the AKA rally. A school bus wouldn't do too bad under this format as there are nightly checkpoints along the way giving you time to play catch up and maybe even beat the car that had broken down or gotten lost.

In my bus, i feel very fortunate that it makes it across the country, let alone trying to break any speed records!

My bus is the only vehicle I have ever owned that hasn't left me stranded somewhere, I've had it die a few times but nothing that was more than fixing an electrical connection.

The only thing I worry about on long trips in the bus is being able to make it to the next gas station.
