Thumbs up Experience Boondocking? (boondockerswelcome.com)

So I'm very familiar and experienced with couchsurfing and airbnb, but my boyfriend and I just stumbled upon this gold mine about a week ago: https://www.boondockerswelcome.com

Holy cow.

Can any of you share your experience boondocking? We're looking to do a cross country trip this summer. We have a family of three, sometimes four. Myself, boyfriend, our 5 month old son, and bf's 9 year old boy who is with us sometimes. This seems like a pretty safe way to do it!

TIA!

click on the map and research the area that you'd like to stay. Click on the host members name and it will give you their restrictions. Most of the one's I looked at only wanted older (65 + ) people to stay with them. I'm not that old yet and have children, so it was a no go for me.

a smartphone app might help you out....
Allstays app ($9.99) shows you which walmart parking lot, etc, you can or cannot stay at...
Camping Apps: iPad/iPhone Apps AppGuide

Camp & RV is another great camping app for iOS. This universal app will show you nearby campsites. Both the iPhone and iPad interfaces are very well done. The app can even store some of the information on your device, which is needed when you do camping in remote areas. There is a ton of information in this app. Included are over 18,000 campgrounds in the United States and Canada. These include both private and public sites. There are also other neat tidbits such as rest areas, RV rental locations, and other places of interest. Although a great app, it is quite expensive compared to some of the others.

I tried to stay as gender neutral as I could.... it was the quotes that touted iPhone/iPad.... just because I drink the kool-aid, doesn't mean I like it
bought my iPhone3GS in 08, jailbroke it, upgraded to 4S in 2010, jailbroke it, and use it everyday... 5 years is a pretty good run for a single phone these days. I won't buy another one till this one doesn't do what I need or want.

this might help the cause....

And both SWMBO and I have no intention of updating our phones anytime soon, either, except when they no longer hold a charge

Cancelled Verizon who we had for over 12 years and went with a Tracfone. Bought them all thru either QVC.com or Hsn.com.

Ya I know shopping off the TV. I wait till they have a good special and just upgrade our phones every year.

Our phones have cost us between $99 & $129, are the closest we'll come to the latest & greatest.

For the price we get a new phone, 1 year of service, 1200 free minutes, 1200 free text & 1200 gigs of data. When I see that we're getting low on minutes I start looking for a new special.

If I was to go buy a service/minute card I would pay $99 to add another 1200 of each minutes/text/data to my existing phone or just get the same along with a new phone.

When I activate the new phone, I have them port my old number over (so it never changes) and they transfer all that I have left from old phone to new and still add the new.

Right now, my phone has 2,685 minutes, 4,972 text messages & 3,578.5 g's of data along with 560 days to use them.

The service is thru either Sprint & AT&T or T-Mobile. Don't remember at the moment. All I do know it that service here at home is better now than it was with Verizon.

Clints phone is a SAMSUNG ANDROID and I just traded mine for an ALCATEL One Touch POP with a 5" screen.

Total cost: $99 divided by 12 and $129 divided by 12 ($8.25 mo & $10.75 mo) less if I don't use up all my time etc. That comes to $19 a month for both of us & we can cancel AT ANY TIME.

I went around the country with a friend, three cats, two dogs, and a goat in a popup pulled by a Honda Element for four months last year. We paid for about 5 nights and stayed at free campsites the rest of the time. We pretty much exclusively used freecampsites.net.

Put the location you want to go into the map and see what's around. They also show cheap paid sites, parking lots, etc. Click on the listing and READ THE REVIEWS. Do research on any one you decide on to see if it actually exists and is still free. About a third of them we went to either weren't there, weren't free, or the directions were so bad you could never get there. A good way is to call the ranger station in whatever area you'll be in if it's a national forest. They'll tell you what's free and what's off limits. We wasted hours and hours of time and gas money, with lots of added frustration, but when you did find a good place it was definitely worth it. The views in most of the places we found far surpassed and of the things we saw at Arches, Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Redwoods, and Yosemite National Parks. A lot of it is public government land or BLM (Bureau of Land Management). Invest $80 in a National Parks annual pass. It will give you access to a lot of other free camping areas that would otherwise cost $10/night.

Another tip: most casinos (on reservations) will allow you to stay 1-3 nights in the parking lot if you sign up for their free player club. A lot of them have free water and/or power hookups. The kids couldn't come inside, but it's not a requirement to go inside other than to sign up for the pass. There's free soda, coffee, and hot chocolate at most of them, and cheap food and cheap cigarettes if you're into that kinda thing. My trip partner found Marlboros for $2/pack in Idaho once. He stocked up. Another perk is that most player club accounts give you a free $5 or $10 (and $20 in lots of Oklahoma casinos) to play with for signing up. With two people this adds up. We stopped at every casino we saw for five minutes and ended up making close to $1000. Granted we did go to probably close to 100 casinos.

Another option worth mentioning that we've used in the past is Helpx.net. It's sorta like WWOOFing but not exclusively organic farming. People are willing to host you and pay for your food in exchange for 20 hrs a week of work. All sorts of kinds of work. Babysitting, caring for animals, farming, cleaning, computer work, house remodeling, glass blowing assistant, etc. It's fun and you learn a lot of skills. And lots of the listings accept children.

You really don't know who your friends are until you spend 5 month with 3 cats, 2 dogs, and a goat in a popup camper!
Did you ever play "who dealt it?

We have four large bread dogs, a Newfoundland a German mastiff a great prynese and a saint Barnard so a lot of Rv parks wouldn't let us in and we aren't 65 either we are still young by Rv standards, so to combat the problem I registered my dogs as esa service dogs. Under federal Ada code they can not keep you out because of your service dogs. Some have tried to charge deposits for them until I show them the law and tell them I'll call the police to come straighten them out but then a lot of cops are ignorant of the laws as well so it helps to carry the laws in printed form with you . As far as no docking goes a lot of cities have pass laws against it you can alway use roadside parks provided by the state , I realize safety is a concern but guns and dogs prevent me from having problems. I haven't so far had any problems with anyone I also have 8 cameras on my Rv I bought a home security system from Amazon made for a house be installed it on my Rv instead so I can cover 360 degrees around my unit and what ever I'm towing

A great almost free spot is national forest or national parks you can buy a park pass and at most national parks you can dry camp free or next to free a lot of state parks are so cheep it's almost free most truck stops you can park if you fuel there and they have sequirity at most

That's cute =]
It's technically illegal to travel across state lines with a goat unless it has a valid Certificate of Veterinary Inspection. We got one when we left but didn't keep it updated. It's also against the rules to have goats at National and States parks without a $30 permit each visit, and sometimes altogether not allowed. But we played the "ask forgiveness, not permission" game (at the risk of anything from a "you can't be here" to a hefty fine) and not one person even mentioned it. We weren't very covert about it either.

it's funny you should mention goats.... I get email updates from our local channel 5 news... It appears that the government of Fayetteville Arkansas is hiring a company "Greedy Goats" to be eco-green landscapers!

It will be effective other than the fact that they will also eat all of the desired landscaping as well as the poison ivy. And stand all over every vehicle in the neighborhood!
