No Skoolies allowed

Currently looking for a skoolie to refurbish for a full time machine to travel the States for 2 years then heading to Costa Rica.
I was wondering how much trouble am I going to run into at RV parks not allowing school buses?
I'm going to have it subtlety and professionally painted. And I do plan on doing a fair amount of boondocking, but considering this is my first journey I'm sure I will frequent several RV parks, traveling from St. Louis to Maine, down to Florida and then to the west coast and up to Alaska. Hitting almost every state from Colorado west as well. Thanks.

It can be quite a problem. Even converted coaches can have problems. Some rv parks have a "no older than 10 year old rv, no buses" rule. Some are very lax. We are converting an old coach but when we are done it will look very much like a newer high end rv. We still plan on using the state parks for our majority stays. A lot if rv parks are getting very snooty and I just don't care to spend my money at those places...

From what I could gather from the conversations I've had recently with two different RV park owners it looks like the less than 10 year rule is something that the insurance companies make them do. They said they'd let us in for little short trips, but not to live there full time.

Most state/federal parks don't have any restrictions.

Just don't paint it like this, have a sign like this in the windshield or dress like this.

How about we all chip in and start a "Skoolies Only" campground? Screw those Dinos & VanDrools & Wanderlodgers!

But seriously...I have been shopping raw land and there are some pretty sweet deals on beautiful, undeveloped land all over the country. I plan on buying a couple acres here and there for my own use, but it occurs to me we could form a network of our own with minimal participation. Anybody else like being in the middle of nowhere?

There is nothing wrong with it except if you want to be let into a RV park. Well maybe the third picture is a little sketchy.

Seriously folks --- I've been shopping small acreage (2-10 acre) tracts for a couple of years now and there are some mighty pretty spots available if you don't need electric and plumbing. Just a place to park a self contained unit can be had cheap in many parts of the country. The areas I have been shopping are North Carolina...northern Arkansas (along the White River)... New Mexico (near the Colorado border), West Texas high desert around Terlingua/Big Bend and Oregon. All have "undeveloped" land on the cheap that could be grat for self sufficient rv/skoolies. And if we individually bought some land...maybe we could form a network to share it at super cheap day rates with our Skoolie friends to offset the $25 to $100 buck annual taxes such land requires.

Just a thought.

My eyes are always open for a piece of land. Found some on public auctions but haven't acted yet.

We just completed our 8th glamping trip with 2K4S and have had no issues with what type of RV we have. I have never stayed at an "RV Park" or for sure an "RV Resort" so don't know if they'd welcome us. (Don't really care)

Sounds like an awesome idea to me! Still working on getting my skoolie off the ground (no time) but count me in. Reside in Oregon if you ever look this way or get something going with your idea.

Ive also noticed the we don't like school buses in RV parks, as ive checked out a couple in my area. (Oregon, Newport) With that said, an RV park isn't going to be my first choice.

The wife and I are in...

We're new and still working on our girl Abigail. We have only stayed in state parks, and I don't have any desire to test the waters at an RV park.

A buddy and I have been thinking about this option as well. Skoolies are on the rise. I see more and more Facebook groups and posts every day, which means it will only increase over time. I'd love to host skoolie, especially since my friend has been having a difficult time, at best, finding a place to park for a day, week or month.

I wonder if it's something that could be crowd funded. You'd need to start a company or trust to handle all of it.

Actually, that first photo is of Further!, which is a historically important vehicle IMHO. Ken Kesey owned it and travelled in it; it was at Woodstock; it figures prominently in Tom Wolfe's The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, Tim Leary and the Beatles were introduced to LSD while in it. A real Hippie document.

I got an opportunity to crawl all over it a year and a half ago while it was in Balto on a fundraising tour. Maybe I should post my pics under "Short Bus Conversions". - Dan
