Unpredictable weather and fast moving winter storms are things we have kept in mind while planning the conversion. We have been "chased" more than once by severe winter storms. We are from an area in the Southern Appalachian Mountains that tends to get some really nasty winter ice storms. Snow isn't that big of a deal unless you are in higher elevations.
A several years ago, we "discovered" the Cherohala Skyway. It is simply beautiful especially in late summer when the lower elevations are still hot. It's great for leaf peeping because it changes much sooner than lower down. We discovered that you can park overnight on the overlooks. One winter we were have a rather belated anniversary holiday in Fontana Village (It was a week before Christmas... our 25th wedding anniversary was the previous February) . We heard that it had snowed overnight up on the Cherohala. So we ran up there in the 4WD jeep. Over a foot of snow and only one other set of tracks. It wasn't supposed to of snowed either. That area of NC rarely gets snow before the middle of January. Ice storms, of course. I can count how many "white Christmases" we have had on one hand and have fingers left over! That was when David & I started discussing and planning for potential "emergency weather" parking lot stays. We have watched the weather channel and news a lot when it came to stranded motorists due to snow/ice storms. We have decided we need to be able to sit in a parking lot up to 3 days/night. That means enough water, waste tank holding AND be able to heat us and the tanks without running out of fuel. And we need power so that we can watch TV and check on weather/road conditions. While we do not plan on being in snowy/ice prone areas, there are times when we can get caught, especially at higher elevations while traveling. Mostly late fall, early spring.
http://www.cherohala.org they have a nice and very popular campground in the middle of the Skyway. It's seasonal. but you can pull off and park overnight on the overlooks.
