We had to use these on military trucks when upgrading to LED flashers so as not to induce seizures.

50W at 12Vdc ... 4 amps. Yeah I guess that's about right but holy hell that's big when used to dealing with electronics.

no TRIAC wave chopping there.. 48 watt resistors LOL.. not like the typical 1/4 or 1/8 watt stuff we use in electronics circuits

Wave chopping??? Resistors don't do that anyway and this is DC so.... Yeah the 1/4 ~ 1 W were BIG. My '72 Duster had a wire wound 50W ballast resistor on it. As far as I know, that was as "electronic" as that car was. Carb, no ABS, ... well there was the voltage regulator with something for diodes in it. Separate from the alternator in those days.

thats why I said *NO* wave chopping here because these are resistors... and its DC...

Wasn't sure why TRIAC was even mentioned; are they cheaper/easier to find? Ballast resistor should be the cheaper/easier route but I haven't tried buying electronic parts in forever.

TRIAC is used in AC circuits and chops the wave.. in AC circuits they dont absorb the energy like a ballast resistor does in a DC circuit.. it was an off-the-cuff comment.. they are quite small.. the 600-1000 watt dimmers with the paddles in most newer homes are TRIAC based and dont require huge space and only small heat sinks..

Yeah, overkill, but $6/ pair. I bet them LED's need the heatsink for dissipation.

I like this gizmo. Resistance is futile.

Generally they only need to be rated the same resistance as the bulb they are replacing .. so around 20W.

superbrightleds.com has decent examples. Too high a load could put a strain on the flasher unit.
