South East overnight - Thanksgiving

Any ideas on favorite places to go for an overnight trip in South East US at Thanksgiving?

Hubby and I have been just about every place there is to go (but we could have missed something) in the SC, GA, NC area. Looking to go south overnight for our first trip with Mildred. Any body have any favorite places, diners, points of interest - maybe in the Fla panhandle? I am leaning towards the Florida Caverns at this point.

I have to work in Panama City occasionally so I know a good place to park but I don't know the area really well - except for Spinnakers . Know of any interesting sites or good eats there?

As residents of SC, I'm sure you have been to Table Rock SP http://www.southcarolinaparks.com/pa...-park/350.aspx (we used to live in West Union/Seneca/Westminster, SC). I take it you have been to Helen GA http://www.helenga.org/ and of course did the leaf peeping thing in Franklin/Cherokee NC. I'm told peeping by train is pretty cool http://www.gsmr.com/ and if you are into trains and history/architecture.... Stop in at Cordele's Ga Vets State Park http://www.gastateparks.org/GeorgiaVet (our fav in the GA SP system) and do the train tour to Plains GA (Jimmy Carter's home town and home farm... looked like my grandparents house)http://samshortline.com/. As for PCB... we spent a few months there during the "off" season. As a seventh generation FL Native (born in Ft Pierce), it breaks my heart to see what FL is like now. I literally cried when we first drove down the beach road... all those condos/hotels built on the dunes and sea oats. when we left FL back in the early 1980's, they were trying to get the dunes and sea oats protected from development... guess the all mighty dollar won out with the greedy SOB politicians. the only way we go back is if I win the lottery, become a multi-millionaire and IF that happens, I have promised my daughter a family trip to Dizzy World with a weeklong stay in the Victorian hotel... we would fly in... It's a long way from NM by bus (1600 miles from Franklin NC to Socorro, NM)
