What is it about that transmission that makes it untowable? (That's a word, isn't it?) I have heard that due to the way the automatic transmissions are designed, you will burn them up due to lack of lubrication when towing. If this is the case, I have heard of a work-around that pumps the transmission fluid while towing to avoid this situation. I knew a guy to had this done to his Chrysler car back in the mid 90's and it worked perfectly. Otherwise, Toyota Sienna is FWD, you could use a dolly to tow it and it would probably end up cheaper in the end.

Do you need to use a lube pump?

That's what I was talking about! I knew what it did, but couldn't remember what to call it.

They forgot to mention surplus military vehicles are able to be flat towed, just put the tranny in park (for 4X4s, 6X6s, etc.), the transfer case in neutral (for 4X4s, et al), hook up to the frame mounts, and go.

Having been in the government surplus business for the past 11 years and owning four CUCVs, I know little things like this..

My CUCV was $300, my wife's was $450, my son's was $1200, the M1031 was $4K, see a trend? They are averaging about $1K at auction now. Five years ago I could get eight CUCVs for that amount. Inflation sucks. If you're seriously looking for one google "gsa auctions" and go to the first link. Keep checking back because the auctions turn over quickly.

As far as the bobbed Deuce goes, Idaho Motor Pool does it, but it's not cheap. I know how to do it, but it's more work than it's worth. The bobbed Deuce takes an M105 trailer bed perfectly. The Deuces are really meant to be off-road trucks only, though you can use them for on-road purposes. I put 30K miles on mine before I sold it. The air-over-hydraulic brake system is a high maintenance pain-in-the-a$$, expensive too.

Any suggestions on what type of dolly to use and how to actually hook it up without a hitch? I have two hooks that jut down from the metal frame underneath the rear bumper...not a hitch like I have seen on other vehicles that tow. Is there a way to have a hitch installed....never done a hitch before, but there has to be a first time for everything, right?

You need to have a hitch installed. No getting around it.

Car carrier is considerably more stable as well. I've used dollies, thus the reason I own a carrier.

Re: Super Bummed...about towing

BEFORE you buy a dolly, make sure that your vehicle will fit on it. I seem to recall a few folks had trouble with the Toyota minivan/SUV fitting between the wheel fenders of some dollies.

Re: Super Bummed...about towing

A hitch is actually quite easy to mount on a bus due to the straight framerails that extend all the way to the rear bumper. All you need is a frame-mount hitch with the same width as your frame rails. You may have to drill a few holes in your frame to bolt the hitch on to, but they are relatively easy to install.
