Towing and gas mileage?

We're purchasing a 98 freightliner Thomas automatic 7 window bus today. Planning on traveling for a couple years at the least. We want to tow a car behind our bus so we could roam around cities more efficiently. How bad on gas would our bus then become?
As of now we have a 2001 safari van and I'd love to just tow that but depends on how bad of mileage we'd get with towing that behind the bus. If it's too bad we'll sell it and get a small car.

Any tips, stories and advice seriously welcome and appreciated.

Engine specs and transmission type would be SUPER helpful to know. We tow a Nissan Xterra (~5000lbs) with our 96 Amtran bus. It's got a DT466 250HP engine and an Allison MT643 automatic transmission. The transmission, itself, might be the biggest determining factor for towing in general. Mileage? We haven't checked towing vs. non-towing, so I can't help ya there. We get around 8mpg towing our SUV behind us.

I towed behind my first bus full time for 6+ years.

I got 7.25 mpg with or without the toad.
