USDA National Forest Maps

Since many of you are interested in boondocking, I thought that this post from the Escapees Forum might be of some interest to you. I did edit the post to include the website links.

The Forest Service is in the process of completing their Motor Vehicle Use Maps. These show the areas that are open to boondocking or dispersed camping. If you are outside these areas you can be cited. These areas are NOT posted on the ground in most cases, you must be able to read the map.

Here is the link to the Forest Service Motor Vehicle Use Maps: List of completed MVUM Maps http://www.fs.fed.us/recreation/prog...ohv_maps.shtml

For background on the use of these maps see my blog posting: usbackroads: Forest Service Boondocks http://usbackroads.blogspot.com/2010...locations.html

The links are not complete in some cases. If you click on the Forest and cannot find the MVUM map find the recreation tab on the left and click on that. Look around for a link with MVUM in the title.

Well, these maps are basically VERY difficult to read in most cases. When you visit the Ranger Station you will get this EXACT same copy. So download ahead of time and study them. Then you can ask questions when you visit the Ranger Station.

WARNING: These map files are large....so make sure you are on a high speed connection before downloading.

Good luck.
