To be perfectly honest, I 'd love to have done all red rims. I love them on older vehicles. But...I'd have to pull them all. And at about 160 pounds each...meh...maybe just a stripe

If you ever decide to erect a scaffold this size on your own...DON"T!
Won't even go into the details but suffice it to say...getting this sucker together and up was NOT fun. Especially after my "volunteers" failed to show.
And if anyone who claims to be an "engineer" works up the plans...RUN! He screwed up just about everything on this order and it is only $hit luck that it fits either the bus or the building.
Wound up using about a fourth of the crap they said I needed (and paid for). Rigging the overhead chain hoist to lift it all up was fun too.
Oh well, it's up and tomorrow I can get going on stripping the rest of the roof...then sealing all the seams...then applying some rust converter...then painting it all.
ONWARD!

Still want some whitewalls. May have to paint'em on.
Today...spent about 7 hours wire brushing the old paint off the center of the roof. Got maybe 1/3 of it done. Need to keep at it as the scaffold has to go back within 28 days...now 26. And still a lot to do up there.

Sorry Jack...no pix today --- just more boring a$$ paint stripping. Went back to using a stripping disk for most of it. Fewer crinkly needles to pick up all over the shop (or out of my butt). Only using a wire wheel around all the giant sheetmetal screws where the disk won't reach.
I am about 2/3 done with paint removal. Will be glad to move on to the next phases.
PS...my back and surgical hernia are killing me! Yeouch!

All of the latex paint is finally gone off the roof. From the front...
...to the rear.
Next? About a hundred feet of seams to be sealed.
ONWARD!

Still at it --- Gotta beat the deadline for returning the scaffold.
These are the standing seams Wayne used on the roof. Nifty idea that is a RPITA to deal with. Getting them cleaned up and trying to get decades worth of crud out of them has been...interesting. But I have to admit, they do appear to have kept water out for the last 72 years.
The process involves (after removing all the paint)...cleaning gunk out from under the raised seam...taping off along both sides...working rust converter up under them...then applying seam sealer.
Once this process is complete I can rust treat the rest of the roof and get on with painting.
ONWARD!

Thanks for the pics Tango--did anybody get hurt in that wreck? That's the meanest thing I could say to express my jealousy over the quality work you are doing on the paint prep. I finally just gave up on getting all the latex paint off my bus and went ahead and painted it anyway. I know, lazy is as lazy does.

Howdy Jack --- Believe me...if half of it wasn't flaking off, I would have been happy to paint right over it all!
Got nearly all of the seams sealed today, Just a couple of small ones still to do, then probably some Rustoleum "rusty metal" primer. Taping them all off made a HUGE difference in clean up but...dumba$$ that I am...did not wear gloves. May be weeks before my hands shed all the urethane stains!
Personally...I think they should make some that is flesh colored.

At least you have screws. I have one badly wrinkled exterior roof panel. All rivets in mine. But, that is looking good.

Thanks Wm --- Mine is pretty crinkly too with a couple of large indentations. Tried pulling one out and gave up.
Did discover something while removing the paint though. Both the big wire wheel and the stripping disks I used acted like a shrinking disk. As they heated the metal, numerous smaller indentations popped out as I worked around them. No such luck on the bigger ones.

More work than it looks --- Spent the whole day doing some prep work for getting some paint on the roof.
I HATE paint prep. Half a mile of two kinds of tape and you feel like nothing really got accomplished.
Threw some more "chrome" paint onto the front markers. Also had to take time to mask and etch what turned out to be a couple of aluminum patches. Probably where a destination sign and some makers used to be.
Lastly...
Cleaned up and primed ten roof rack brackets. Left them in Muriatic acid for twenty minutes to get all the skanky mill scale off, then a quick hit with an abrasive disk to clean them up and then applied some weld-thru primer.
Hope to get some actual primer on the roof manana. Still a lot to do, but...
ONWARD!

Still on it --- Got a coat of primer on the roof then started attaching the roof rack brackets.
Removed the cowl from the A/C exhaust housing I made (years ago). Naturally, it was rusted in place. Cleaned it up for priming.
The somewhat Art Deco cowl itself is another story. Will take it over to a buddies place tomorrow for sand blasting.
Rolled on a coat of good ol Rustoleum "Rusty Metal Primer" It really only had a little flash rust, so (hopefully) this should handle it.
Got the roof rack brackets welded on the passenger side. Will do the others manana. After playing in the sand box.
ONWARD!
