Pretty slick dip stick. The round knob looks perfectly functional.
I'd have known you were back from just a glance at the first pic--I saw your multi colored bed roll just inside the door!
How about using one of those little electric winches Harbor Freight sells, you know, the ones rated at 2000# but only good for 200#. That way you could raise lower your spare tire with no effort at all. That didn't come out right. I didn't mean your spare tire, I meant the bus's spare tire. Wait, that doesn't sound right either!?! All my spare tires could use some help Jack. And while an electric winch might be nifty, a manual crank might help burn off part of one of them. Though I confess that I hope to not be using it often enough to make a difference.
Which for some reason reminds me of all my ex-wife's exercise equipment. Somehow they all quickly tuned into expensive clothes racks.

I did just that-a boat trailer winch to hold up my spare tire. Works fine. Simple-cheap-few moving parts.

Just dropped off some steering parts at my local machine shop. Need to have a section of serrated spline fabbed from scratch in order to hook my steering column to the gearbox. Turns out that having custom spline shafts made is not cheap (surprise, surprise). Will get some pix when it comes back.
Note to anyone considering a complete rebuild on a classic (aka; "old") school bus...
START YOUNG!

More drafting & fabbing with nothing yet to show for it but greasy paper and worn out pencils. Still working out/on the spare tire carrier...steering column...doghouse...driveshaft...parking brake...exhaust system...and...the replacement for my frames main crossmember. That last one has been a head scratcher. Can't go any farther on the driveshaft and park brake until the original crossmember is out of the way. It's tempting to just weld some steel in, but these old frames don't handle welding very well so it has to be either bolted up or hot bucked riveted. And since all I have are pop rivets...it looks like some drilling and bolting are in order.
Pix...some day. Meanwhile, back to the drawing board. Literally.
ONWARD!
PS...in addition to starting a project like this at a young age...I should also add you would also be well advised to acquire a machine shop and sheetmetal works as well.

More battles --- Hey Ol' Trunt...I'm guessing you may have discovered this already, but it turns out that Isuzu NPR steering parts are among the most oddball, expensive and hard to find on planet Earth.
Been trying to find an input shaft for a steering gearbox to use as part of the newly fabbed column. No such. Isuzu doesn't even sell that part. If you want anything other than a few of the seals...you buy a complete gearbox. For a bunch of bucks. Even a worn out "core" (when you can find one) can run $300 or so. The rebuilts are about $600. What a rip!
Went to a local gear cutter to see if he could make the small, serrated part of the shaft I need. Once again...it is so peculiar, he could not make it without buying a special cutter that would run close to a grand and probably never get used again.
So...I am spending the weekend having to re-design that part of the steering but now wondering if maybe I went down the wrong path. Next time...I'll look for something a little more...common.

I need to replace a couple body panel sections on my old Toyota pickup. Plus, its just a cool thing to have. Maybe I'll make a hub cap, or a dog dish too.

Hey Tango. I'm not quite sure what you are trying to get fabed up--do you have a picture to share? I went with the entire Isuzu steering gear and simply changed the drag link to get the angles I needed. As far as the input shaft goes I used the original coupler and just lengthened the shaft in the steering column itself. I know shipping would be a killer but the Isuzu steering gears are very available here as it seems nearly all the medium duty trucks are NPRs so finding another gear for you would not be a problem.
I guess I'm still not clear on what you want to modify and why. Jack
