I finally converted my little workshop to heat with wood. I can work in comfort with just a t shirt if I really get it going. It's not very efficient but it works and there is ALL those dead ash trees that I have to cut down anyway. Surprise, surprise Mumsywumsy likes to help split wood. Wellllll, she likes to pull the handle on the wood splitter. She also seems to like helping stack wood. I really think it's because she likes to ride around on our old Cushman.

She helped when it was about 0 yesterday with 6 inches of snow.

thats my issue NO body insulation.. and im not about to go get some insulation, this is 2017, my dual gas furnaces and wood-fire in the fireplace keep me warm until I can get south!

I love an old wood stove in a shop!!! friend of mine has one. we burn EVERYTHING in that ole stove.. its becomde an incinerator as much as a heater...

Don't want to get too far off topic, so I'll lead with some weather comments.

Houston is supposed to be "semi-tropical". So why the heck are we about to get several days in the upper twenties! And Winter has only just begun! We don't "normally" get anything like chilly weather until February but this past year has been anything but "normal".

Meanwhile, back at the ranch house...

While cobbling together a device to get a proper template of my inner roof profile, I got a very pleasant visit from Skoolie member Guido Lyons. Spent the day chatting bus stuff and taking a peek at the awesome build he did on an old IH Scout. Really impressive work I can relate to...stuffing a gigantic and heavy engine into a tiny little space. Like many folks I know, he started out to just do a simple upgrade but before long, the body was off the chassis, parts were everywhere and new and necessary bits and pieces were being fabricated to make it all work together. He did a brilliant job of using as many standard issue (easier to replace) items as possible and wound up with one really sweet off-road, rock crawling little beast.

Thanks for sharing Guido...totally enjoyed the visit. You are welcome back anytime. Always good to meet another Vet too. Give a shout anytime you are "up here" playing with whirly birds or whatever brings you to the neighborhood.

how cool is that!!! nice to see a scout buold too.. I grew up with 2 scouts ion the household.. actually 3.. but the 77 was short lived.. got traded for TWO brand new 80 DIESELS.. (i guess i started learning the diesel thing early on)...

always fun to talk to a fellow wrench-turner!! love when that stuff happens.

Yeah...it was a very impressive swap. He stuffed a big block V-8 diesel into that little front end and somehow made it work. Very cool indeed. Need to convince him to post a few pix here. Would be very educational and motivational for anyone contemplating almost any kind of mods.

The other thing I did while Guido was here was to start making a template for my inner roof line to fit the bath walls and cupboard. Has a bit more curve than most modern buses.

Used this...

...to create this (still to be cut out)...


...which also allowed me to make this...

..which represents the outer curve of the roof which I need for a patch panel that needs to be rolled.

I can deal with one and two dimensional curves...but it seems everything on this beastie is double compound.

what a cool tool to make for that!!! what i wonder though is if you take your template to the back of the bus is the curve the same as it is at the front, and on both sides? seems everything in a bus is completely measure-cut-fit for EACH piece!

Tango, thanks for the hospitality You know it's a good build when you got random strangers from the internet dropping in.

The Bus (and Tango for that matter) are even cooler in person. I wish I lived closer.

Cadillac --- The question of fit overall is the very next test (maybe today). I am hoping to at least be close at other points but not willing to put money down given the nature of this design. At the very least, I should have one point pretty well nailed.

Guido --- Honor and pleasure to meet you bud. And thanks for sharing that kick-ass build. I have the feeling you and Christopher could chat for days on all the cool details as well as the challenges that such a major transplant required overcoming. Very impressive work and a great result. Won't ever see another like it.

Now to deal with this #!@%#! weather. Feels more like Chicago here than Houston. My old bones HATE the cold and the next few days will get into the low 20's! That's just wrong!

wow thats super impressive scout!! the engine bay in the original scout was Much smaller than in the ones we had (Scout II).. nice build for sure!!! that short wheel base has to wheel better than our II's did.. though they were great on the trails.

ours had the stock Nissan Diesel Turbo 3.3's in them.. talk about an engine that woukld go and go!! 375k on one and dad swapped it with his other scout (scrapped due to a tree falling on it) that had 150k. because it was smoking.. turns out just the injectors were bad!! the engine was (is) fine (in someone elses scout now)..

Hey Guido...cannot recall...exactly what engine is that? And adapting the 4x4 driveline was a story in itself. Gotta be fun on the trails.

Oh, that little thing? It's a little 58cc diesel.

Well, 8 of them together in a V 7.3L

which engine is a 58cc diesel? sounds like an engine i'd love to have to run my A/C while parked!!

I remember the 3.3 Litres in our scouts only had 110 HP.. and thats the turbo version.. dad bought highway gears.. we downshifted alot in the mountains..
