The ceramic coating is Kryptonite!

Meanwhile...

More gauge stuff...

I HATE wiring. Mostly cause I really suck at it. Me and anything electrical...even the most basic...have never gotten along. And now that none of the gauge makers take the time to include even the most basic printed instructions...even more fun!

Just a test fit --- After a lot of nail biting and drilling, I tried placing the gauges onto the overhead console I built earlier. They all fit! Still waiting on one more pod that I had to return due to crappy moulding. It will house the fuel level and be on the far left. Also need to find one more rubber grommet. Had to open up the hole for the EGT wire a bit larger than the rest. Will add a switch on the left side to control all the gauge lights. Plan is to install a ground bus bar and a hot bus bar that they will all hook into so only one hot lead will have to come into the console. Still need to install the sending units for everything (except water temp) but will keep after it.

The console mounts just above the driver side windshield and has a hinged access door. Still looking for the right 1-1/2" O.D. flexible hose to try and run some defroster air through the whole thing and onto the windshield.

ONWARD!

Looks good Tango. The buss bars sure will help simplify the installation. Jack

Thanks Jack --- But what would simplify it even more would be for you to come and finish up all the electrical!

Thought of you just the other day when a buddy showed me a pic of the bottle below...

From an irregularly flashing billboard atop the Lucas Electric Factory "Lucas Electric--Home Before Dark". The only Lucas Electric part left on my Morris Minor Traveller (toad) is the windshield wiper--it still works, or it did last time I tried it 6 years ago. Doesn't matter anyway since I'll never drive the little woodie in the rain! Still, it is comforting to know that the replacement smoke is still available.

Tango, you might want to stock up on that Lucas Replacement Smoke as I've heard that it is compatible with VDO products--you know, just in case. Jack

Gauges.. they seem to be an after thought in so many builds, even including mine. A gauge here a gauge there. So it is really nice to see a well planned gauge setup. At some point I need to figure what I am going to do with mine.

welding exhaust bungs can be fun, I just welded in one for an oxygen sensor, and yes had to use a mirror as well. No I am not posting a picture of it.....

Thanks to all for the very kind words --- But it still remains to be seen if any of this s#@% actually works!

Cadillac...yes...I am still hoping to run some small ducting (1-1/2" O.D.) through the console to feed a couple of windshield defroster vents. Still working that out. Just located some small, flexible vent hose but no luck so far with actual vents that will work within the limits I have. Talking to a kid here at a "Maker Space" who sez he can 3D print anything I can sketch out. May wind up having to go that route.

2 inch hose is the preferred if you can squeeze it in .. I have some pretty small ball vents that don’t take a lot of space ..

Looks nice Tango,

Careful with the 3D printing stuff. It needs heat to print and with added heat the strength might be compromised

My 3D printing experience is VERY limited.

While a member of a makerspace on the West side, I built a CNC router that used many 3D printed parts MPCNC).

when I moved back to Eastern Washington I placed my CNC machine gently into the back of my bus and drove 300 miles.

When I arrived numerous 3D printed parts had fractured or completely broken.

I moved my entire household in two bus loads and the CNC machine was the only casualty.

I would want to address the durability issues before using 3D printing for parts on my bus.

I also want to thank you for sharing your build here. It has been an inspiration.

Looking good on the outside of that enclosure with the instruments sitting there now.

Truthfully, the inside has to be done correctly to pull this all together.
This leaves me with many questions, observations and suggestions.

The inside is all important because an instrument failure could give you lots of grief.
I won't even get into it in the thread but PM me if you need/want suggestions.
Just get all the materials and tools together you think you need and we should talk, mostly about the right material to finish it off to perfection.

Is that whole enclosure designed to swivel when installed so as to be in a good line of sight from the driver's seat.
Nice job on the dry well for the EGT cable. Tough job but would have been easier if you held the stinger in your left foot
Any probes like that be sure never to use Teflon tape on the threads.
How far does that probe extend into the well in the exhaust pipe?

May be able to handle 2" ducting but still having fits finding actual ducts that will work in the tight space I have. If you have anything that will hook up to 2"...please, let me know.

Happy to share my many screw ups. Maybe a few of them will save someone here a few steps.

The overhead console is fixed but just above the drivers' line of sight so it should be OK. Ran most of the EGT cable today and hope to wrap it up manana. I got the 15' cable and will probably have about three feet left over. It is a fairly long, tricky run.

The probe goes into the exhaust stream about two inches which is consistent with what VDO advises.

I rolled my extra EGT cable up under the dash and Velcro strapped it. Hey say not to cut and splice it since it’s thermocouple wire,

These ac vents are 2 and a half inch but you can flatten that flex duct into oval shape which is how i ran it behind the defrosters in my dev bus. It’s metal wire spiral like a slinky covered with rubber and with a little effort is definitely recshapeable.

That would be (pardon the expression)...awesome! I can PM you the address info. More than happy to pay for what you have. Just let me know. Also in need of a "Y" splitter to cover both sides of the windshield properly.
