90 shortbus
Couple weeks ago we bought a 90 chevy 6.2. I have removed the seats and pulled off the door which was bent. I am in the process of doing the solid door conversion. I cant get the diesel to fireup the previous owner had to start it with starting fluid, i want it to start on its own. Then we will get to ripping up the floors.

As far as it not starting on its own, check the glow plug controller. If it is getting power and in decent shape, replace the glow plugs and harnesses. Personally, I'd replace it all... new controller, harnesses, and glow plugs (look up which brand is best to use.. avoid autolite, and cheap junk). Or.. full manual with heavy duty solenoid and a push button.
You can always put the glow plug system on a push button and delete the timer/controller.. heavy duty solenoid and new harnesses.
Careful with the starting fluid. Don't hose it down.. just a sniff if you have to use it.

6.2 is a great motor! It's not built to win any races but it is built to last.
If you're having issues starting, it's probably glow plugs as the previous posted suggested.
You can test your glow plugs with a multimeter on the resistance setting. A good glow plug will have a small amount of resistance, an ohm or two. A bad plug will have either no resistance (fused) or no continuity (cut). You measure between the tip where the connector attaches and the engine block.
The glow plug relay (solenoid) is also a common fail point. It will have 2 big terminals and 2 small terminals. When current flows between the two smaller terminals, it should bridge the two large terminals. You can bypass this by using a plastic handled screwdriver to short the large terminals together. 11 seconds or so is what mine would take to start on a day above 40 degrees.
The glow plug controller is the third piece. It most likely reads a temperature sensor and uses its value to determine how long to run the glow plugs. When they malfunction, they generally either stick on or stick off. On will fry your glow plugs (and maybe the relay too), off will keep you from starting.
FInally, the temperature sensor. If it's not reading properly, the glow plug controller won't know what to do.
I'm a big fan of bypassing the temperature sensor and the controller and just installing a button, especially on a mechanical motor like the 6.2.

Ok today I replaced all the glow plugs and controller, I am having a hard time finding the inhibit switch. My manual that I downloaded which is for a 90 says its up by the alternator, but I cant find anything there. I found this but not sure if it is it or not, it is on passenger rear of engine by glow plug. can someone tell me if this is the inhibit switch so I can bypass it.

Is the inhibit switch just a temperature sensor telling the controller that it's warm or not?

I made some progress on the bus the last little while, worked on the door(which I will put in another post) and removed rear heater and got started ripping up the floor. I have one question and that is why does my floor look like this? It has corrugated in the center and flat on the sides, also has a couple holes in the floor for some reason.

If you look in the hole by the door, you will probably see access to the fuel pump. My access is in the same general location.

I have 4 holes they access some bolt that you can see in the hole, all four have a bolt
