Pretty much the entire bottom is rusted out. The lip inside that hold the seal is rotted to oblivion. It leaks when I wash the bus or when it rains.
THe seal is a crazy piece to try and duplicate or fabricate. I found a fabricator that sells the bottom piece of the door, but it would be free to panel it over, and lots of time and money to keep.
If I had my own shop, and didn't have another bus I'm trying to work on, I'd have all the time in the world to spend on this. But I'm trying to have my bus painted in the next week.

definitely sounds like a take out... since yours almost looks like it was an afterthought.. you going to yank the outer frame and all off too? or just make a flat panel and a Nice big RV window for back there so it looks kinda like a "bay window"

Yeah, without the door, it leaves a nice flat rectangular space that would be easy to panel over. I'll throw a couple pieces of 1" square tubing or something behind it.
I wouldn't mind keeping it, but its gonna cost so much its not worth it.

my carpenter has one.. just behind the main door.. I love it.. EXCEPT it is a source of huge cold and hot air infiltration.. I have worked on the seals, etc.. but m,an this winter driving.. even with 7 heaters on high, the soda pop on the floor next to the door still froze.... granted it was 14 degrees outside but still that was inside the bus on a long road trip.. when I put it there as I left the gas station hours before it was liquid..

so yeah those dorrs can be a PITA

My rear door hinges are so bad, I'm gona have to rob two off the WC door. SO there's another excuse to delete the sucker!

And since I'm loving my new riveter, I've ordered some 3/16" rivets in short grip ranges. Stainless closed end all the way!
Now i'll have a range of rivets for various applications.

Yeah, I like rivets now! A LOT!


So current plan is paneling over the rear windows and WC door. That will be a total of 6 "delete" panels on this shorty!

So what riveter did you get? I've got a pneumatic one but think it's a little small for the bus application. As always we want pics!!

The big HF model.
It handles 1/4" rivets for $70. But they have a 20% off coupon rt now.

I'll keep an eye out. I went crazy bidding on a BB shorty in GA a week or two ago, but that thing went for nearly 6 grand.

For what it is, and what it cost, it CANNOT be beat.

That's good to know for when I get settled and want to do future work. For right now, I'm getting it done as complete as I can so I can hit the road but I'll will be renovating and making mods in the future. I have some rust issues back by the license plate but for now I'm using Bondo. I don't like having to do that so I'll work on it at a later date and get it done the right way.

I'm thinking about cutting an access panel inside to better get at the rear "butt cheek" on mine that's rusty.
Went out today and did some ospho application, some adhesive removal, and gave it a good bath with dawn before the rains come tonight and tomorrow.
After looking at my WC door REAL HARD for a hour, I'm waffling on deleting it.
IF if could find the rubber seal, or someone to make it for me, I'd be inclined to possibly repair the rusty bottom edge and guts and try to keep it.
But I'm on a time budget and steel is cheaper for me than anything else.

I've got Goof Off, 3M adhesive remover, Naptha, mineral spirits, acetone, a heat gun, and lots of other tools and chemicals.
Nothing seems to take off the adhesive from the reflective tape at all. Its just smearing.
I end up softening it just a little by SATURATING it, then carefully scraping it.
I'm goin ham on it next time with a wire wheel on a drill, I think.
