Flat nose 466 + non at545 trans

Hi guys,my e450 is been sittin since i first posted here gutted.but lately i came to conclusion that its gon be small to my needs.
So i started to lurking craigslist and govdeals but couldnt see any dt466 + not at545 combo in short -flat nose style as thomas.am i wrong expecting such combo?i saw plenty shorties with regular front end 466 + at545. But i need it to be as tight as possible since im trying build up ultimate roofing truck.🐹 any hints would be great where to find .

You're looking for your unicorn, like most of us. Some of us, that already have buses, still look for the one special setup in a bus. It's out there, but how long are you willing to wait for the perfect bus? Many of us have found that the bus we thought would be perfect isn't so perfect. So there's always a better bus out there.

You sound like you know what your looking for. You'll always remember your FIRST bus.

it would be great to have real medium duty engine and lockup trans just because i have about 3 months till next season starts so i can wait little bit or buy something now
i think i have to draw all cons and pros then make decision.maybe regular bus not that bad and would backup in small 2 car road to driveway smh.
anyway i should use search i believe u guys discussed this issue million times.imjust lazy bum

There seems to be plenty of Shorties with a 466. Is it hard to source a better gearbox to go with it?

Idk,i cant find with multicity craigslist nor govdeals.all 5.9 and at545 which i know pia to do 70mph loaded 😒if u know any places to look would br grateful 😌

I guess just keep searching. When you do find one it's likely to be in a state where they need the power. School Districts don't buy stuff because "it's nice to have".

I'd be looking in Western states and mountainous states ... even West Virginia and Tennessee are likely to have some.

i gotcha.
other question is how do i know if bus has pto or doesnt have it? is wheelchairs powered by pto?i need to install crane on chassis and tryna figure out how do i power it

I have yet to see a bus with a PTO (unless it's some rare military use). The wheelchair lifts are hydraulic, powered by an electric pump. Plenty of buyers getting rid of the lifts, should be able to snag one cheap or free.

Which buses have this trans ?is it possible to power crane with gas engine and some gearbox to spin crane's hydraulic pump ?

The Allison 1545 is the military equivalent of the 545 we are all so familiar with. Several people have bought the 1545 in new condition through federal surplus auctions.

That said, it would be pretty expensive to set up the PTO without using a donor vehicle.

whats the ballpark for 1545 swapping $ in shop
and make separate power source for hydraulic pump of crane ?
i found gas powered honda for 15 gallons per m which is fit crane needs of 14 gal it cost 2400

The 1545 seems to go for about $500 in the auctions. I don't have any idea how much shops would charge to install it. If you're needing a pto, and you're happy with the 545 performance, this should work.

robin - while you were away a member, Turf swapped one of these into his bus. we all thought it would be an easy swap for an AT-545, however the torque converter depth is different on the 1545, he had to have a special spacer ring custom made to get the trans to work in his bus. he also noted that the trans was perhaps set up for different rear gear ratios and possibly a different engine, as it shifted into high gears at very early RPMs.

while its definitely do-able, i would ratew it as an advanced swap to get in and adjusted correctly.. its more than just turning wrenches..

though there are no electronics like was involved with my transmission swap. so thats a plus.

i see,its easier to buy that setup with honda engine or pto gear and add it to current trans
PS. i just dont need int 4900 nor any other 2 ton trucks,they are all dead and price much more for the same condition bus.

Honestly, I can't see a reason to go through all the hassle for a PTO driven pump or even a gas powered one when the electric pumps work just fine. I highly doubt we're talking the extended duty cycle of splitting logs here, just a couple minutes of use to lift something heavy into a bus.

Thanks Chris, I was completely unaware of how the 1545 turned out. I just assumed it worked.

If all you're needing is hydraulic pressure to operate anything, electric would be the way to go. I have an electric lift on my small dump truck that appears to be powered by a starter. Simple to mount and no big resevour needed. A wheelchair lift would have a pump in it too, but kind of a low volume pump.

crane that i found says it needs 14gpm ,12v on ebay are for dump trucks,trailers.i guess ihave choice to add pto gear
