generator in rear ????

Anyone ever mount their generator to the rear bumper ???
I was a little nervous about having 22" of $1000.00 generator hanging off the back bumper but I figured where I drive a 50ft + long truck all day I shouldn't have trouble remembering not to smash it off something !!
I painted the bumper and mounts safety orange and figured I could add a few small running lights to the generator frame to add some night visibility.
I going to need a longer receiver hitch to keep the trailer swing the same. The weight didn't seem to bother the bus any and the noise isn't bad either. It's bolted down right now but I may make a separate slide-in cradle so I can take it off the bus and put it further away when I get where I'm going.
Where does everyone else mount their's ???????

2 problems....need to use hitch for trailer and generator for AC while on the road.....plus that would mean leaving valuable space inside for storage.

Re: generator in rear ????

WELL....it's been 6 weeks that the generator has been hanging off the rear with no issues. I plan on adding a bumper / pipe cage around it with a few lights for safety. I'm going to have to make a custom hitch so that whatever trailer I have on it doesn't swing into the generator. The receiver I built into the bumper could pull down a building so I'm not worried about the leverage on the bumper. If the weight ends up too far back for handling I might have to use load leveler bars but I don't think so.
I plan on adding air bags to the rear for leveling anyway.
So far so good.

Re: generator in rear ????

Have you considered extending the frame?
I am looking into that.
Get 1/4 channel steel and kick out the frame about five feet.
I just got my bus and setting up floor plan and ideas.
Reason to kick out the rear frame was to mount my gen and propane 40lb tank with toolbox. The extra space would be to carry my motorcycle.
I am also going to mount a trailer hitch to it.
The bus weight is max at 15,000 lbs load.
I've been stripping it down and weighted it; now it is at 8000lbs empty.
I figure another 2500 lbs for the conversion goodies not including the bumper stuff.
Brakes no problem great big disk brakes on all wheels.

Re: generator in rear ????

I'm in same boat. I am doing a 10 battery deep cycle bank, with two optima batteries isolated solely for starting..but havent done the #'s to see how much power i need for my AC since my bus doesnt have it stock I need it pretty mucy 24/7 so thought maybe a small 2500 generator like those little hondas mounted under bus in ventilated box ran to batteries to keep them charged when runningAC and hopefully the converter/inverter i get will have an auto on/off so i dont have to manually turn on gen everytime I want to start the AC. Also thought just for now since I am also building custom rear bumper that over hangs (not that big though but now you got me thinking) but am also pulling a small trailor for my bathroom, storage tools shower etc.. but putting a 3500-5k gen in the trailor. only thing, when i dont have trailor connected i wont have my generator Keep the post goin guys and pics ofwhere you all have yours jerry rigged!!!

Re: generator in rear ????

I am in the process of designing an extended bumper for my '46 Chevy Skoolie. Maybe an extra 30 inches or so to hang propane and such, but what I'm really after is a way to rig it so I can slide it out another 30 or so inches when parked to form a rear deck. I figure if the "big boys" can have whole living rooms slide out, I should be able to manage a small deck. Still trying to source extra heavy duty "slides". Will likely have to make them.

Re: generator in rear ????

We plan on hanging the generator off the center beams under the rear of the bus... along with the heater and A/C unit. Got to get to that point first!
