Hello From SLC Utah

Hello all, my name is Keith. My wife, Lynn, and I have just bought a 91 Chevy G30 Wayne short bus. It came from Wayne with a chair lift, 5 seats, and automatic chains. It was in a small town in Wyoming (pop 446) and was used at a retirement community to transport the residents to the store and Dr. appointments. The town was so small, that the bus was only driven 37k miles when it was replaced. I found it on the internet, knew it was right for what we wanted to do and now it resides in SLC. Good part about the bus is that the PO always kept it inside their garage.

We plan to put a booth in the back that turns into a bed and a wet bar. Now we can get into camping once again. We are still working on colors where to carpet and just how to accomplish what we want.

It's nice to be a member here and after reading many posts, I have learned some facts I didn't know. Thanks for all of you that have posted with great information.

EDIT: check out the bus at:

Thank you, I was fun working on the bus. The wife wanted to say, "taking out... we were putting it in!"

Howdy Keith & Welcome to the World of Skoolies! --- Nice lookin' rig and sounds like a good, straight forward plan. My bus is from the high plains in Utah which I fell in love with on the trip to check her out and do the deal. Mighty pretty country up there.

Best of luck on the build out and don't hesitate to ask questions. There must be about a thousand years of collective conversion experience between all the good folks on this board. Between us, we have no doubt made just about every mistake that can be made building a bus. That's gotta' be worth something!

Thank you. I WILL ask for information from experienced members. I have modified an old US Mail van (steering on the right side) with a booth in the back. The bus is a longer by about 7 feet. It will have room for my electric chair as well.

Gray Eagle, thank for the welcome. It seems that the members here are down to earth. Seems nice that the members are tolerant of spelling and all the stuff that happens when one is trying to type their thoughts, instead of just speaking.

I found out the PO had replaced the factory drivers seat with one from a car. It sat crooked and leaned to the center. When I started to check what could be done, found that the seats were held in place with sheet metal screws. These were the biggest I have ever seen it took a 11/16 socket to fit the hex end. I guess they would be called lag bolts. 1 1/2 inches long... Glad I saw them before, well you know.

As I do things to the bus, I will take lots of photos and will pass them along. Lynn has just informed me that it's time to go for dinner. So bye for now.

Keith

Re: Hello From SLC Utah

That's good to know. We reinstalled the front step railing, making it easier for me to get in. When I found out the last PO had installed the passenger seat with the wrong bolts, thinking of safety I removed the front seat and will use it in the driver side. It has power 6 way and that will make it easier to handle the long trips.

Now to figure out why the dome lights don't work.

Start with the simple things first, bulb?, fuse?, voltage at light? ground? trace wires for open...etc

Thanks for the tip. I will check the things that are easy first. The bulbs test OK but no voltage at the lights. So the fuse is next.

Keith on my bus the domes are wired into the little console above your head in the drivers seat. In my bus I have a switch called "master" and "pass dome" and both have to be in the on position for my domes to work. The dome above the driver door functions with the headlamp switch. Im probably just stating the obvious lol, but we do have the same bus and maybe we are wired the same.
~Jeremy
Jeremy thanks for the info. I don't have a master switch. Maybe that's why it doesn't work. I will look closer into the box and find out what is going on.

I have been reading your topic since I saw your bus was the same as mine. Seems there many ways to customize these buses.

Thanks for the info, but too late. On Sunday we pulled the seat and replaced it with a 6-way power seat. Now the guys at the dump needs to learn the "Gangsta Lean," while they have coffee.

Re: Hello From SLC Utah

Found the electrical box today it sure has a lot of stuff in there. LOL Just two fusses to look at. Found that all of the wires are numbered and seems they have used the same numbered wires for only what the number is for. Found the problem with the dome lights, so they work now. (Well, will be as soon as I get some LEDs off of the internet.)

Here is the box that was used for my bus. Remember the bus only had seating for 10 people.

It's off to the internet for lights... I'll keep you informed as we progress.

Re: Hello From SLC Utah

I have a hard time seeing what is behind me when I want to back up. I have installed a B/U camera and Monitor to help. Here are some pics of it.

This is the monitor on the windshield. It doubles as a mirror and a monitor. If you look you will see the neighbors house and in the left side the camera that took the picture.

I will keep on keeping on...
