What have you got for a transmission and rear end gears? If you are pushing through an automatic with low ratio gears you may getting about what you can expect. It seems a little low, but it is a big block gasser! Make sure you are tuned up properly, clean and properly gapped spark plugs, clean cap and rotor, good ignition wires, ignition timing set properly, distributor curve set properly, vacuum advance working properly, no leaky vacuum lines, etc. Being a '96 is it fuel injected? If not, make sure the carb is adjusted properly. There are many things that can lead to poor fuel economy.

Re: MPG comparisons

My 31 ft class A RV has a Chev 454 and Turbo 400 tranny. Average MPG is about 6.4. So your not far off with the MPG your Ford 460 is getting. I asked around and those gasoline rigs get terrible fuel economy. That's one of the primary reasons I'm looking for a diesel skoolie to convert. That and WVO.

Re: MPG comparisons

8 mpg highway. 96 3500hd, Automatic with OD, 350 gas, 14500 gvw. 65-75 mph. Loaded to the gills with band equip and people. Some fuel wasted loading and unloading with lift as I leave bus running then. Wish it was better, but it is, what it is. Diesel might be a little better sitting at idle but not much. Gas is cheaper and not near the hassle to deal with in winter. Theres also probably 10,000 good used 350 engines out there whereas a good diesel, thats been treated right, can be a challenge to find.
