Re: My 1996 E-Super Duty MetroTrans

I have my state boards coming up on the 4May14, so I'm studying hard right now. After that, it will depend upon fuel$$ available, unless I show up in my F350...... The B600 is rather diesel thirsty....... Anything out on the west side of Houston works best for me.

Re: My 1996 E-Super Duty MetroTrans

Loaded up the car and took the bus on a 200+ mile road trip a week or so ago. Drives, runs, and handles great! Mileage is about 8 (a guess). Both A/C units showed a need of work, so I have been messing with that. Added some R134 and fixed the blend door in the dash. Now we have cool air! Decided to add a curtain between the Cobra and the seats to help keep me cool. Trying to get things ready for the trip to Denver next month. Adding gauges, new starter, changing all the fluids again, etc.

The bus has now become my Friday truck. I take it to work every Friday to shake it down and see if I need to fix more stuff.

Re: My 1996 E-Super Duty MetroTrans

Just returned from a 2,000+ mile trip in the bus. 7-8 mpg at 65mph. Only problems were a blowout on the left outside rear tire and the cruise control quit working. This thing is noisy inside! I have to figure out how to insulate the floors.

Re: My 1996 E-Super Duty MetroTrans

Bought 3/4" thick rubber horse stall mats from Tractor Supply and fit them to the floor. Sure quieted things down a lot. Also added more insulation to the engine cover. Converted both A/C units to run on the same compressor and the side mounted condensing unit. Bought a junk yard cruise control module so that is fixed. Installed a huge trans cooler from a 6.0 liter Ford Super Duty. Things are working out pretty well

Re: My 1996 E-Super Duty MetroTrans

Just been driving the bus with no problems. I've been gathering parts to swap a Cummins diesel into my bus. So far I have bought a 1991 Dodge Cummins engine and a Ford Torqshift 5R110 auto trans along with other parts. Did some work on both to freshen them up. Still have to so something about the 4.63 rear gear.
The biggest problem I have is the 460 in the bus uses no oil and runs flawlessly. Really no need to change the engine unless something goes wrong.

Re: My 1996 E-Super Duty MetroTrans

Very inspirational thread. I've been tossing around a bunch of ideas regarding this lately. Everything from a 5th wheel to a school bus, but a shuttle bus is looking like a better alternative for me. Here's why:

I already own a wrecked 7.3l, as well as another which replaced it. This means I have a working (albeit well-used) motor, transmission, transfer case, 4x4 front end. 4x4 conversions on these can be done without too much work which would suit my lifestyle well. I'll be using the rig for all sorts of things, camping, playing in the dirt, snowmobiling, snowboarding, traveling. Possibly living off-grid even.

I like the idea of the rear door opening upwards as you did, I'd then employ an actual floor that folds down as a ramp though. This way when not in use, it could be propped up on a couple jackstands and greatly increase the living space. Add in a snap in bug screen and you're set.

Anyway really nice job, cant wait to see where you go from here.

I think there are a lot of good uses for these shuttle buses. Lately I have been just tweaking a few details on my bus and driving it. Some day I really need to repaint the bus. Really sounds kinda perverse but I actually LIKE driving this thing!
