Need help making a market on a skoolie

I found a bus on craigslist, a 1995 Bluebird 30 series 20 passenger bus with only 40k miles. The guy told me orginially it was a school bus and then a family bought it because they had so many kids. He says everything works fine. It has a wheel chair lift that I don't need and he is offering $2500. Obviously I will inspect the bus in great detail and not commit to anything today. However, I was thinking of offering him the scrap metal from the metal seats I rip out and the scraps from the wheel chair lift, on top of that I'd offer him $1,000 cash for the bus. Does this seem like a bad offer? I know this is the place to ask. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Need help making a market on a skoolie

I checked the bus out. It was the PERFECT size I was looking for. Inside the bus a 6'5 person could stand no problem. I am 6'4 and didn't have to bend. The bus has already passed inspection and is good through 2011. There are no visible rust spots or problems. No leaking fluid, engine and transmission is smooth. The one question was that it's a gas engine and not deisel. Should that be a concern? I offered him $1800 and to sell the wheel chair lift but he didn't move. I told him I will call him. The bus only has 41k miles, some of the letters are already peeled off which helps. There honestly is nothing wrong, the guys are mechanics that are selling it. I just have to work on getting my friends to commit to buying it with me. I think I'll do $2,000 but I can't see myself being financially able to do more. What do you think? Also Smitty, another question....you've been my main man on here helping out.

PAINTING THE BUS...

I've read on here that you can paint it yourself. You need to pressure wash it, strip off all trim and lights, prime the metal, use a certain brush/roller or spray gun and paint it on yourself. This is obviously A LOT cheaper than paying for a pay n spray. Any suggestions here? I have to run and recruit guys over a pint of beer, I'll keep you posted.

I am still working on getting people to commit. I was thinking of paying the guy in installments each month, but only if I get enough friends committed to the project. I know the important thing is having the bus first. All the bells and whistles can come later. I will keep you guys posted because I want to show off my project on here with pictures when it starts taking off. I'd like to call back sometime this week and offer $2,000 if I have enough guys who are in.

You might want to research the difference in fuel economy, longevity, and functionality between a gasoline and a diesel engine before making that decision. There are good reasons why most large trucks are diesel. And that is what a bus is really: a large truck. The price sounds fair to me. Smitty is right, the gassers are cheaper than the diesels, but again, you get what you pay for. Of course I am a little biased towards diesels, as you can tell by my screen name.
