Replacement transmission costs?

Found an otherwise perfect short bus, but . . . needs a new 4l80-E. Where is the best place to get one and what's it going to cost? Probably too much to be worth it but I figured I'd check.

Noob here, not a car guy at all.

I was quoted 3k for a 4100R (I think that was the model, I don't remember).
Cheapest would probably be picking up an used one from a junkyard. Just google junk yard in your area and call them up.

If ya gotta have that one. I would look to buy a parts bus for that 3 grand.
IMO I would go find another bus in great shape. Scads of small buses out there.

A friend of mine eventually was able to bandage it and he sold the bus for me.

I'm actually looking for a 4 window short bus. But nothing so far.

The 4L80-E is a coummon transmission you should be able to find a good used at your local pull a part.
If you want it rebuilt it can range all over the place low of 1000.00 to a high of 3000.00+ depending on the parts used.
That is probably why the bus is for sale. If you can get it dirt cheap and willing to do the work it might be a great deal. But towing a bus can get very pricy fast.

It's stuck in second gear as opposed to totally fucked. So can be driven to a mechanic in town. Any advice?

The average cost of a rebuilt 4L80-E is just less than 2000.00 is the bus worth that plus the labor of the install?

I have an E-450 and had the pleasure of destroying my transmission climbing the smoky mountains this year. Here's a tip: be careful your overdrive isn't on when climbing mountains everyone! I got stuck on a winding mountain road and had to hire the biggest wrecker they could find to tow me out. It cost us three days in a hotel and $3500 for a rebuild. Lesson learned the hard way!

Just had to deal with this, a used transmission from a wrecking yard with R and R would cost $4k

To rebuild my transmission was going to cost $6k.

Pretty typical costs around the puget sound, but I shopped it around and the tranny shop that checked it out for $100 found it was instead a linkage problem, total cost of fix $200

I personally would not get a bus that needed tranny work. The cost is simply too great, even if you got it for free, it will cost you $4k to put in a used tranny and then the bus is worth $2k after tranny cost. Mine is a 99 E450 and I am on my 2nd bus. The first bus I had for about 5 yrs and now my second around the same amount of time. I was facing $2k in just brakes alone with the first bus and some engine and wiring problems due to it sitting and I sold it. The second bus I make sure and it gets out on the hiway and gets the oil hot and moving to all parts of the engine, also make it inhospital to little creatures like mice who love to eat wiring.

4l80 stuck in second is limp home mode, you should be able to get a code off it to see what is wrong with it

4L80E are extremely common transmissions. Even my 1993 K2500 suburban has one... The technology center where I sub has a certified ASE transmission instructor that quoted me $800 to rebuild (I pull & reinstall)

Well, I went to the right place they tranny shop I went to fixed the linkage for $200, but this and brake rebuilds are something to think about due to cost.

I could justify a $2000 trans rebuild *IF* I planned on keeping a vehicle a long time and racking up some miles on it. Not so much for a once-a-month driver or something I didn't intend to keep for a few years.

have you checked all the fuses, my buddy had a tranny get stuck in 2nd and it was just a fuse in the engine area. trannies are run by electric now. take the battery cable off and reset the computer, check all the fuses and make sure your harness going to the tranny is ok
