it seems to be rather easy.. i suppose that an insurance company has access to DMV records? but when ive insured my vehicles ive never been asked to show proof of ownership.. I just call up with a VIN and tel lthem i want insurance and what i want..

vehicle definitely doesnt have to be registered.. however as others have said the insirance companies love to deny claims for any number of reasons.. (they look for reasons to deny) some policies only cover a single driver.. in fact most are that way.. something to think about when multiple people may be driving your bus..

carry comprehensive if you can... covers fire, vandalism, or other non-collision damage. (tree falls on your bus).

comp coverage is the reason I got a rather nice insurance pay-out when my first bus was deemed destroyed after the garage fire.

while I also believe that busses dont tend to stand out, the only attention ive gotten from police in mine has been "neat bus, what do you do with it?".. doesnt mean that even a minor fender bender couldnt cause you great issues with the police if your tags are not proper and current. Police take "thumbing your nose" at the law very seriously.. so a simple traffic stop with infractions can give them cause to look for many more things "wrong"... whereas keeping current tags and good faith effort into complying goes a long way toward other stuff being overlooked by the cops...

But do they say they won't insure you if its not your name?
Maybe it varies from state to state. I'd bet on it.

I absolutely have valid insurance. The tag office closed early for Xmas and Iíve been out of town.
p.s. you have to have ins before you can get tag at least here in FL

You are correct. INS has to be purchased before they'll even register it.

Normally you have to have an "Insurable interest" in the vehicle, which means you have to own it.

"Most auto insurance providers require that you own a car to place it on your policy and insure it. This is called having insurable interest in the vehicle."

There are exceptions, but trying to rationalize Wanderwoman situation is pushing it. I would be willing to bet money she would not be covered in the event of an accident. you have to remember Insurance companies are in the business of making money and will find every little excuse to not pay out on a claim if they can get away with it. I was recently in a rare end accident. 82YO man ran in the back of me, told his insurance that I hit him. I asked if they read the police report showing him at fault. They said they had , but were standing behind their clients claim, WTF. Had to sue him and got screwed again when he showed up with his Allstate attorney and the judge dismissed the case due to no evidence. WTF, how about the big dent in the back of my truck and the damage to the front of his Escape. There is no justice anymore.

That seriously sucks!

Girl Puuuhleeze. You said you've been driving it for 15 months without a tag. If you get pulled over "out of town' with that excuse you will probably still get a ticket.
