According the School Bus Fleet forum, 2000-2004 are the most susceptible to this issue. But I've found a few cases of late 90's and post-2004 DT's having it, too.

No idea. They so far down on my list of things to do I've not even given them much of a glance.

Repair estimate isn't good. I've asked them for more info. I got a long list of part numbers and a price I simply can't afford even if I wanted to pay it.
May have to call the tow company back.

current estimate is $8700. I have to see what all these parts they've got listed break down to. Unreal.

Wow, that is bad, no surprise they were dragging their feet on the estimate, that is just way out of proportion.
man, I feel for you know, that is horrible.

No, it's just the beginning of your B&B.

Now you're starting to see why so many of us stoop to using JB Weld.

I'm done, man. Gonna scrap it and find something new to do that's not so frustrating or expensive.
This shoulda been a recall or at the very least a TSB. But instead Navistar just kept churning out crappy engines. No wonder they're now putting Cummins engines in their trucks. I hope they go out of business. They're in massive debt, so maybe they will.

You could buy this:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/2001-Intern...hZxXH8&vxp=mtr

... and pay your local diesel guy to fit it.

That would cut the bill in half.

IDk, unless its had the front covers updated I think I'd pass.
Seems that Navistar likes to build engines that need to be "bulletproofed".

If there is a serial number where the newer covers were fitted at the factory, you could check with the seller.

Its INSIDE the castings.

Screw Internationals. I'll never buy another.

This front timing cover costs more to replace than it cost for an in-frame. WTF???
They don't even have to pull the head, at least as far as I can tell from the repair estimate.

I meant an engine serial number. When significant parts are changed, there is usually a serial number where the change was made at the factory.

ALL DT's made between 2000-2004 are equally as susceptible to this. There wasn't any factory fix. They made them this way till they went to the EGR and 24 valves. Even later ones have this issue too, sometimes.
Unless you have the entire history of the engine, you really don't know till you take the timing cover off.

I can't afford for them to take it apart, and the problem is well-known in the industry. It also pretty obvious when you have the engine pissing the coolant out right in front of your eyes.
I apparently owe them $300 for diagnosing it lol.

This is just the cherry on top of one stellar year, I tell ya what.
