I'm starting to think you guys need to get together and build a skoolie-repair skoolie. 10 foot flat deck in the rear (for holding engines/transmissions/other heavy parts), a 5-ton hydraulic crane (for lifting said heavy parts), on board air, and a set of hydraulic jacks so you can lift a bus with a push of a button. The only difference would be that when you made an appointment, you'd come to them instead of them coming to you.

Gotta get new batteries. The ones that came in it didn't like sitting since March.
Well, I've been wanting to get over to Rural King anyway so now I've got a reason.

My dad did the mobile mech for awhile. The cars becoming computerized/fuel injection in the mid '80s killed that. Just recently (this year) I heard a radio commercial for someone in the Baltimore area giving it a try. Buses would be easier than a 2000+ Honda electronically anyway.

I accidentilly left all my computers on in RedByrd for a month and when I went to start it up yesterday.. NADA.. hopefully i didnt destroy my new rural King batteries.. although i think they have some kind of warranty on them. i'll get the battery charger on them and give em a nice slow re-charge instead of a Jump and drive.
I also noticed that the ECM on the T-444E (and I presume the DT-466E) have a small parasitic load anyway even when I dont have my dash computers on. it might be just sitting , your ECM killed the bats. might want to pull the ECM fuses while the bus sits until you are ready to work on it..

2006 or 1998? I think my Blue Bird went electronic mid model year. The 2002 BB is certainly more electronic than even mine. 2006 and newer has to be a nightmare.

if you are working on Navistar they give away the diagnostic software that will work on everything up through the VT-365 which is up through 07 I think?
for cummins and Cat im not sure if the software for the older engines is cheap or not..
once you get into that 08+ stuff then things get really hairy as far as repairs.. special tools and much more secure computers (so people dont defeat power-sucking emissions stuff)..

Bus batteries have an awful lot of lead and acid in them. If they're new, they should take a charge just fine. This you know already.

Cummins still charges for their diagnostic software, as does Cat. Both diagnostic suites can be found pirated online for free, or a minimal charge. Use at your own risk because they've been known to carry viruses. Also, those programs are usually a year or two out of date, but are still somewhat functional diagnostically.
As a side note, the pirated stuff is usually what's found on the "all in one diagnostic lap top" that you can buy on ebay, and craigslist.
As far as the reprogramming goes, both manufacturer's require a subscription and internet access to work. That kind of stuff is purchased directly from the distributor and is only available to dealerships and certain school districts.
There are tuners that use back door methods to create and load custom programming onto an ecm. Use those guys at your own risk. I know of a guy in Canada that's pretty good at it. Sadly, there are more out there that aren't any good. I've seen examples of new engines ruined by some hack tuner working out of the trunk of their car.

If I had figured that one out I wouldn't trumpet it around. You'd have lawyers on your a$$ faster than ants at a picnic.
I've been wondering if this could be challenged, or if it has already been litigated. Anybody know how the John Deere reverse engineering case came out? There must be other applicable case law on this. For instance, the general aviation industry got a pretty much blanket exemption from product liability on anything older than 15 years.
I would think that the 15-year rule, combined with the obvious fact that our use is obviously outside the original design wheelhouse, coupled with "I own it, it has that capability, you have no right to protect me from myself, and I'm not a signatory to any agreement you may have had with the original manufacturer" should be enough to make it happen. OTOH, they may be in a legally tenuous position and relying on the fact that ain't no skoolie with the bucks to litigate this.
Sorry for the threadjacking.

Had a good swing and a miss on an OH bus that went a little too high for a parts bus for me.
Got a couple of buses I'm scoping out now, hopefully something will happen and we'll have our bus up and running 100% this year.
I just want a solid, good running engine and newer tires than my bald recaps.

Bus may have found a new owner. Shaun offered me cash for it.
It would be tough to let go, but having another bus we like even more sure helps. Gona think on it for a day or so.
He's not had a bus of his own and I think he's really enjoy it. He's even talked to a mechanic he went to HS with and can get it fixed.
Too many projects, too little time.
