Just thinking here, your bus walked home from Texas like a champ. No need for compression test there I don't think. You must have felt how it holds the revs up accelerating thru the gears too since getting it.
Auto parts places will loan you test, ..easy peasy to do for coolant pressure test.
I suggest getting towing coverage for all your vehicles in one package like we have up here. Annual cost pays for itself if towed once. Here a big wrecker costs $185/hr, mileage included, so yours seems way high for the distance.
I understand how Shaun might freak about doing this at his place but you can do this repair. Won't happen overnight but very doable to change the front cover. I don't get why you can't do this at home really. All the support you need in in this place and you are having a get together so get some help with this.

Over and out,

John
IDk there's so much I'd need, and the city would be on me like stink on a dog turd if I did this here. They think my bus is painted and titled as an RV. Its neither at this point. Its gonna be an even more expensive tow to my house and then I've got an immobile bus in my driveway that I am legally not allowed to have in it.

Man, sorry to see it's gone the way it has the last several weeks but you can handle it. I kind of agree with you, the bus mechanic may have been a little sore to see it go.

The school I got the bus from are definitely one place I'd avoid buying from in the future. Total jackasses.

Its with a heavy heart we're having it towed to the dealer today. I just don't see any other way out.
Once the front cover leak is fixed I need to get the air compressor out and rebuilt. Its a horrible oily mess and the air tanks are full of oil.
This bus will end up costing us several thousand dollars to get roadworthy. Probably more than the $4700 purchase price.

I'm hoping since I'll have her bus for 20+ days, that I'll have the time to roll some white rustoleum on the roof.
If not, she's planning to paint it white.

me too!! maybe she hasnt picked it up yet.. im really interested in seeing that bus.. is an 8.3 that physically much bigger than a DT-466?

I couldnt even find any reference that international ever offered an engine bigger than the 466 in a conventional.. not sure if freightliner ever did. wasnt debbie;s a conventional or was it a shorty RE?

the maxxforce9 was offered by navistar in an RE. it was essentiially a DT-570. it was essentially a stroked DT466.. powerwise I think it was around 300 HP or so... probably gobs of torque being long stroke.

Hers is supposed to be a freightliner CE 5 window with an 8.3.

I just domnt see it.. most all freightliner busses were based on FS-65's which never got the 8.3, even the ford B (partnership with freightliner) never got an 8.3, unless FL made another bus chassis than the 65 for CE style busses.. or unless someone shoe-horned it in there.. my guess is that it has a 5.9 24 valve.

the 5.9s were everywhere.. as well as the various cat's and MBE's that we have seen come scross the auctions..

The tow truck is coming at 10:30-11 to haul the bus to the IC dealer.
SO GLAD the leak didn't pop up on I10 with Shaun and Nichole driving it!
The dealer shouldn't take terribly long to get the work done. Will probably be done in a day or so.
Costs $$$$$ to play the bus game!

yowsers! so its leaking bad enough you couldnt drive it in with the radiator cap loosened? is your IC dealer a rush truck like it is up here? if so ive had good luck with rush truck in general.

defimnitely glad it did fine for shaun ands company driving it home... probably good the fact it had the speed limiter on it that it did.. had I gotten to it first, I wouldve turned off the speed limiter and driven it at 65. which mightve caused the leak to happen quicker.. - perhaps the energies that kept me from making that trip over Thanksgiving were a positive force after all..

it definitely can take $$ to play the bus game.. I know this form my trans swap.. fun? yes, much better than before? YES, expensive? YESSIR

It lost a half gallon of coolant going to the end of the street and back.
If I tried to drive it the 20 miles to the dealer it would probably be very bad idea. Worst coolant leak I've ever had.
I'd love to NOT spend thousands of dollars, but sometimes you just gotta bite the bullet.

wow i didnt know it was going out that fast.. but i guess makes sense since its on the pressure side of the water pump.. before the thermostat too so its building up pressure against a wall when the engine is cold.. even cap loose probably wouldnt help that.

better to fix the coolant leak before you get hot and have to In-frame it.

Yeah, that's exactly my thinking. And yeah, that's why taking the cap off wouldn't help with this leak.

BTW-
I can't wait to get this BS blue Cummins coolant out of my IC!

After this, I still need tires. And I have an air compressor to fix.
And a rusty fuel tank. And it needs paint.

totally, the dealer should completely flush it clean and install the proper coolant and give you the maintenance procedure for it.. starting fresh so you know what you have,

yep. Start fresh with the right coolant.
I'm hoping since they'll likely access the diagnostic port for the mileage and hours for their records that they'll be nice and enable the CC and raise my top speed.

I need to get a price for them to install a new rear main seal. That requires a $375 tool.

plus you have to back off the tranny and remove the flexplate on that engine I think.. or can it be done by just pulling the oil pan?
