CB, have they actually pulled it apart and to what extent? I would be reeling with that estimate too. Insist they only fix the cover on the front, the back is probably good when gasketed up again. Then get it the heck home.
Labour rates and shop supplies are more than the actual job you need done.
They might stand behind their work for 30-60 days so get it out now, you'll be further ahead and it might still be useful.
This could happen to any of us bud and they are all the same, all they see is $$$signs and bonuses.
So much for CATS being a scarey expensive experience, this IS living proof.

John

I apparently owe them $300 for diagnosing it lol.

This is just the cherry on top of one stellar year, I tell ya what.
May I ask ...

The engine doesn't have to come out, right? What's stopping you waiting for it to warm up a bit and doing it yourself?

I know this sucks, big-time, but is there a silver lining to this cloud?

I'm not equipped or even capable of this kind of repair. I have nowhere to do this kind of thing.
Ask Brokedown why taking a bus apart at Shaun's is not happening. maybe if I could do it in a day, but I don't see that.
Sorry, I'm just bummed out. NO silver lining I can think of, man.

It seems like a doable job, but it requires more than a day to do it. I know if it were me, I'd budget a day just for getting the accessories out of the way, and another day for putting them back where they go... And that's without knowing anything about the process of replacing the cover itself.

I'd probably plan on having it at least partially disassembled or a week.... Which would cause problems where it is.

That estimate is just unreasonable. I don't know if you have any non-dealer options around but that's a bigger pill than I could swallow.

Going to tow it tomorrow. Probably to a junkyard.

Thanks. I've been trying to do this bus thing since I was a teenager. And it just doesn't ever really work out.

IDK as hard as my 6 cylinder van is to work on, I can't see getting one more complicated. I'm kinda realizing that if I can't fix it myself I probably shouldn't own it. Its all I can do to keep my van on the road.

So don't forget that with Roll Your Own, you had done all the hard work and the fun bit was about to begin.

Don't hang it to low man, I think you can fix it yourself. If you want to tow it to a junkyard then you might as well take a stab at it. If it still together the take the thermostat out so you have less pressure build and use some goop to slow down the leak. May be hang a bucket under it to catch some so you can pour it back in. Just drive off the lot to a spot where you can keep it for a week. Start taking it apart and see what you need or what can be salvaged.
You can do it. There are people here who did overhauls, i am sure you can get plenty of help. Brokedown has it right, it is doable. There are plenty of 466 around. Take the front of and see how bad it is. Have a buddy welder build the aluminum back up on the rear cover and front cover and put it back together.
I know it is a pain but you go to hang there man.

did you not already buy a new front cover, if you are already out that money, you might as well try to fix it yourself and hope the back cover is not real bad, also JB weld is sounding real good over losing over 4000 dollars by junking it, I know you do not like fixing it that way but I could not stand losing that kind of money on something I just got

You’re a big part of what makes skoolie.net what it is! Totally understandable that you are bummed. I would be beyond discouraged, but if you can, wait till you feel better before you make a final decision. Sometimes the solution is just around the corner.

Sorry to hear of your rough 1/2/18. Don't make any quick decisions before you sleep on it(maybe even a couple of days), and give the members a chance to digest the situation, with you. Too many good heads here, to help make the dream happen. IMO get it home and when the Fla. weather gets back to normal, reassess your options.

Wishing 'good on ya'

We all have decisions to make. I don't regret getting rid of a bus I had no use for and nowhere to keep it.
The fun wasn't about to begin with that one for me.

Lots of great folks on here, but I'm in a corner with this thing.
They'll start charging me a fee for every day its there pretty soon, so I have to get it in the next day or so.
Anyone have any free storage in Orlando?? Within, say, ten miles of the international dealer? If not, I'm pretty much gonna have to dump it as quick as possible. Shaun won't rest with a defective vehicle in his yard anywhere. My yard won't work, I can't have the city on me again. These tows are expensive, so I have to be VERY realistic about all this or its only going to cost more money.
I'm going to go talk to someone down there in person tomorrow. Their estimate only lists part numbers, it doesn't give part descriptions. So I found that they have a "seal kit" for an EGR. I don't have an EGR so clearly they think I have a 2004 engine. My engine is a 2003. IDK much about these later engines, so I'm not sure what the differences are.
Did they go to 24 valves when they started with the EGR's??

Maybe have the aluminum cover tig welded. You could have them beef-up the thin part. Good machine shop can handle.

Just another idea. Whole bus can't get trashed just because of a leaky aluminum cover.
