My bus was the same way. One set of red lights for brakes and one set of amber lights for turn signals. I can't remember which one, but there was a single wire on the steering column that I had to reconnect. Then I changed the single filament sockets and bulbs in the 'old brake lights' to double filament bulbs. This gave me two brake lights on each side which also flashed as turn signals 'like an american pickup truck'. I just had to take off the amber turn signal lenses and put red ones on. Then I could hook up trailer wiring without any converters. The only issue that I found was that my bus had side mounted signal lights that suddenly became brake lights....so I just removed them and filled the holes.

Re: Splash Party Bus (97 E350)

I am thinking i should be okay for my bus, just dreading installing a brake controller in an older vehicle... plus the new fancy dangled 7 pin connector like my TT uses..

Re: Splash Party Bus (97 E350)

I installed the 7 pin connector, because that's what both of my trailers use, but I only used 3 wires.

Re: Splash Party Bus (97 E350)

I just read this entire thread and was amazed by how quick everything got done. I really like the hardwood floor and hopefully can get some of that down in my bus. Any more hints or tips on how to install the automatic door opener, when its not there at all in the first place.. would be awesome. Also anyone with ideas for where to get seat or how to make a bench.. any thing like that would be awesome.

Re: Splash Party Bus (97 E350)

I don't have a photo handy, but my favorite electric door conversion was done by another skoolie. He simply installed a linear actuator in place of the factory rod that opens/closes the door. This allows the door to still open manually, but gives the option for electric open/close.

Wish I could find a photo.

Re: Splash Party Bus (97 E350)

Although I am not a big fan od the 7.3l powerstroke for skoolie use, it has been good to me and my shuttle bus so far. Yesterday I drove about 250 miles, mostly expressway at 75mph. Utilized both ac units, and let the bus idle for approximately 2 hours. Also had about 3,000 pounds of "cargo." I was pleasantly surprised today at the fuel pump:

11.4 mpg.

Re: Splash Party Bus (97 E350)

I drove 100 miles and filled her up again. Granted there is some room for error with such a small sample, but I got 11.4 mpg again. This time i drove nice and easy, under 60mph. I did more city driving, and a couple hours of idling.

Heard some great compliments, ie:

"can u turn the ac off? it's freezing in here!"
(I fixed the rear ac myself)
"the bus is way better than the bar, let's just drive around the rest of the night"

I'll try to post some photos...

Re: Splash Party Bus (97 E350)

I sold the party bus.

The regulatory fees and insurance requirements for a limo service are simply intolerable. About $8K/year, and that's before maintenance and fuel costs.
