The bus runs great, just a bit slowly. 50 mph is about 2200-2300 rpms. 55 is about 2500 rpms. First change is tires from 9R22.5 to 11R22.5.

Bus is running great. I spent the day in Las Vegas with Choolbus pulling the MT647 from his bus. I am very happy it wasn't too hot. Anyone with a 1993 Carpenter should contact him for parts. Now that I have the transmission, the rest of the bus will get parted out soon. It has a 4 piece windshield that can't be easy to find. Better hurry.

Nice size, nice unit...but if it was sitting in the Amarillo sun...must'a been a tad warm inside.

I was very surprised that it wasn't too hot. This trip wasn't as bad as my trip back from Tennessee. This is what my brain felt like on that trip.

I did try the A/C but it was just cool. I left it off until I get home and have my BIL check it out. The insulation seems much better to be much better that the International but it wasn't nearly as hot on this trip. I did hit a crazy hail storm just out of Amarillo. HOLY CRAP, the weather you guys deal with is crazy. I pulled over in front of a semi under an overpass thinking that if some idiot would run into me, he would need to go through the semi first. It got so bad the people just stopped in the lane completely blocking traffic.

I will grenade the trans at a minimum and I don't know how many more tires I will blow up. So my plans have changed. The bus will stay in Texas and I will go home with the Ex and trailer and fly back to get the bus. I thought I was being so clever doing the way I did but nope. The bus moves fine by itself and maybe a couple thousand pounds people but the Ex is a different story.

Are you home yet CC?

I've been thinking quite a bit about this thread and your journey. I haven't had a problem with the bus overheating till this vacation. This morning, I pulled the inner fenders out, and that made almost a 15 degree drop in water temp. I couldn't believe it helped that much. I think my inner fenders will be staying off for now on. When I get home I will be doing a full size radiator and inner cooler swap this year.

Ok guys, based on CC experienced, what would be the best way to keep the bus engine cool under same circumstances?

got into that situation west of Dallas a couple months ago... no hail, but rain slowed me down to 15mph... driving on 4 lane, and was in 3rd from right lane, could not merge over to shoulder because I couldn't tell who was to the back right of me, and then I thought if I did get to stop on the shoulder... what would have kept me from being rear-ended, because someone didn't see me on shoulder?
white knuckle all the way, not a good feeling!!!

I will need to look at my fenders. The list of mechanical items to be done to the bus in no particular order. Probably cheap and easy will play into the decision.

1. Larger tires. Has 9R22.5, will go to 11R22.5
2. Find at least one or two 6 lug 22.5 rims for spares.
3. Replace split radiator and intercooler with full width units.
4. Incorporate brand new motor grader hydraulic cooler into transmission cooler system. I already own this.
5. Install MT647 transmission that I bought from Choolbuus on my way back from Texas.
6. Change rearend gears if and only if this doesn't bring the rpms down to 2000 at a comfortable cruising speed. FASTER THAN 45 MPH!!!

That's all that I can think of right now. For the inside, a quick setup to get my RV title. This needs to be done as fast as I can get it done. The bus is very solid. The items listed above are only improvements for long distance driving. Nothing wrong with the bus as it sits other than screaming down the freeway while cruising 55 mph.

Here again is the URL for a really handy gear/tire size/rpm/speed calculator. The one at the bottom of the page lets you play "what if" with any combination. Like I said...handy...

It was a pleasure meeting you crazycal and working all day getting the transmission out of my bus. I think you will have a really nice setup when you make the changes you listed. Here's another gear calculator that lets you put in more variables.

Thanks again for everything. Sorry I didn't reply to your last text. I had clients in the car then forgot.

I drove a real car last night with the cruise set at 65 mph. It felt like 150 being that low to the ground. It was definitely a strange feeling after driving 1800 miles at 45-50 mph.

Are you talking about the first part of the trip towing the Excursion? If so, I wouldn't tow the EX. Too much weight.

If you are talking about Hvbuzz, I think he might have had a problem with his fan clutch.
