with a 4.44 rear and 11R22.5's you should be able to go close to 65.. to tach at 2400.. or does the 8.3 not run 2400 RPM?

Same thing I calc'ed. I've seen 2500-2900 rpm listed on various sites.

Looks like 3k might be the max?

will it run 65 or do you run out of horsepower? or it just doesnt like to climb hills?

The parking brake will be a problem, 643 came out of an air brake truck, my bus has a drum parking brake. My bus also has a 3.90 rear with the same tires as yours

On flat ground I can run 65 within the 2500 rpm. I've hit 70 but that was over 2500 maybe 27ish. Uphill is where it dies.

so you have the right rear gears, just need to have more horsies.. or a 9 speed or such where you would have gears in between the ratios that the 643 gives you..

is a few HP as easy sliding the fuel plate on an 8.3 like a 5.9?

643 is amazing compared to 545. I have both. I don't want to mess with all the electronics and all that. The 643 would give me more power and efficiency, as well as help the 444 run a good bit cooler. My bus already does 75mph so I really don't NEED double overdrive. THe freeway is FAR from me and I never use it. This is a daily driver bus, the shorty. 643, full size tires, and 4.10 rear tires would be great. I already have two of the three, just need to upgrade the transmission sometime in the future.

EC - even just running my 1000 in 4th gear (which is basically running like a 643) is amazing compared to the 545... I dont dislike a 545 bit now that ive driven a lockup trans in a school bus i can see why they are much preferred.. even running the byrd in 4th it ran cooler and didnt max the RPMS completely..

I should look for a 1545 (lockup 545) for the DEV bus.

im wondering if they ever built a 444E with a 643 or anything using an SAE2 bell.. thats the big thing is to be able to find the correct spacers for an SAE2 bell.. it may just be as easy as removing a spacer behind the flywheel.. but i didnt take my flextplate off.
