Propane bus milage questions

I just read a note on another forum and someone mentioned in passing that their bus got 2mpg and that average. That seems quite low. I have an 85 GMC 366 propane conversion (standard 5spd) that I just purchased and those numbers scare the bejesus out of me. Any factual info on this I would love. Thanks - Richard

I don't know about a propane configured rig, but mine is a gas powered, 5-speed (engine size, transmission & differential still to be determined) that I purchased in North Oxford, Mass. & drove to Havelock, NC. I averaged 6 miles to the gallon for the whole trip. In my excitement of purchase & desire to hit the road to bring it home, I checked all the fluids, gages, steering & brakes, but did not remember to check the tire pressure!!! A few days after I got it back, it occured to me about the tires and they were indeed low! I am confident that my mileage could have been better. Also along the way, I experimented with holding different highway speeds (it'll do 75 on the straight & level) & drove tankfuls at 65, 60 & 55, and found my best mileage occurs between 55 & 60. Once I get it back on the road again I plan on checking mileage with tires properly inflated. Hope this helps!

check out this website, they are located here in tampa. The unit is expensive but it is a bolt on and it is claimed to increase fuel efficency drastically. We are working on getting one donated to the school for our bus, if ti works ou till post feedback

re: hybrid technology

Hey Frey2, I just looked at the website and as far as I understand thier kit is for modifying a traditional Deisel engine. Which is great but not applicable to my situation.
How have you done on getting it donated to you? Good luck and I hope it works for you. -Richard

Hi. My dad had a 78 GMC crewcab with a 454 that ran on propane, was used to hall 32' 5th wheel and the engine realy lost power when on propane.

1984 Ford B-700 40' bus, Thomas body, 460 gas engine, Spicer 5+2, highway axle gears (probably ~4.10), 10R22.5 tires--about 7.5MPG, mostly highway.
