Re: Selecting the correct alternator?? Any opinions?

Hello all, hope this finds you well!
We've been working hard on the bluebird and i've roughed in the electrical. However, i just wanted to have some experienced eyes to look over my work before i hook up the last wire and blow ourselves to pieces
Things to bear in mind:
- If you are unfamiliar with the intellipower (as i am hahah) info can be found here http://www.progressivedyn.com/all_in_one_pd4000.html
- have no desire for shore power; none needed
- powering a tv, fridge, and perhaps a toaster. Only be in use while driving and unplugged when camped
- battery bank in onboard under sink (with vents! ) Made up of two paired batteries

Alternator (w/ #14 gauge wire on top of cranking battery hot wire) ---->15 ft of #14 gauge wire (W/inline fuse) (#14 gauge ground from (-) terminal to side of bus) -----> #6 gauge wire (1 from pos & 1 from neg terminal of battery 1) -----> intellipower distribution/smart charge module ---->120 V to outlets

Thanks for your time!

-jake

Re: Selecting the correct alternator?? Any opinions?

after relooking,is that just a distribution box for the 110/120v and it's a charger/convertor, so it's not an invertor am I seening that right?

What are your plans to get 110/120v?

or are you going to be 110/120v dependant on shore power and or genny

Re: Selecting the correct alternator?? Any opinions?

Thats what i thought too, but the guy at napa suggested it because there was some #6 pre wire in the unit.
What do you think, should i go like #4?
thanks!

Re: Selecting the correct alternator?? Any opinions?

I edited my post after rereading the specs

I thought it was also an invertor

I am confused alittle on what it does,(you said no genny or shore power wanted correct?)

it says convertor so that would be 110v to 12v (max 45 amps) and then it also uses the 12v it makes to charge the batteries on those notes

I am no expert that is for sure

since you have multiple batteries why are you converting so much 12v from the 110 coming into bus?

I may be off base that seems like alot of money for extra 12v power

how much 12v stuff are you planning on running?

-------------------------------you say you want to run tv,fridge etc other 110v stuff with out a genny or shore power I think you need an inverter to go from 12v to 110v not a convertor to go from 110v to 12v...--------

So where in the above equation would the inverter go? I'd hate to have to start all over again
thanks!

Re: Selecting the correct alternator?? Any opinions?

Interesting posts.
What year NEC? I go by my 2008 edition, but if I don't need an inspection for something (like the bus) i don't necessarily follow the code, and do overkill on the ground faults and grounds like to chassis.

In my bus, I do not have any of the plug in's in the elect panel array. I simply used the Monaco electric distribution box - which has 110v and 12v (with two fuse panels) both in it with a converter, a line from the shore and generator power hooked up to the automatic switch over box.

Re: Selecting the correct alternator?? Any opinions?

i guess biggest question is, what are you trying to achieve.

you want 110v on the bus with no genny or shore power

so you need to turn 12v into 110v

you need an inverter for this job this type of equipment http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Cobra-CP...item519dbad59c

your alternator would charge your batteries, and then the invertor takes 12v from the battery and turns it into 110v

you need to determine power needed
example:

inverter 1 amp guess for 24 hrs so you need 24 AH to power it
fridge pulls 5 amps average for 24 hrs so you need 120 AH (amp hours)
tv pulls 2 amps average for 6 hr so you need 12 AH
toaster (700w) about 6/7 amps for 1 hr (lots of sandwiches in an hr ) so you need 7 AH

right now you need 163 AH per day to power those products for the specified time so using that number I made up not letting bateries get below 50%(deep cycle)
you need a battery bank with about 330 AH rating.

So after you have used that 163 Amps you need to get them back into battery bank for the next day this can be done by solar, battery charger, generator, wind power or shore power

normally you can charge your batteries with the alternator, it wont give a good charge like controllers do tho,so you need to provide 163 amps back to the batteries

run numbers and see how much power you really need; if the bus is running and the alt is charging the excess charge will help knock off some of the lost AH

I just used made up amp draws for the conversation
