I definitely love this build.. Custom HVAC (even down to building my own boards and writing my own controls software) is a passion of mine.. so im totally into any info you post about how it works and what not.. Love this stuff!

Sorry
Did we hi-jack the 98 VanHool thread because he asked a question?
Maybe we need this advanced AC in it's own class?

So if your ever building a custom DIY chiller and order TXV valves - make sure they are adjustable!! So the stupid ones I originally ordered 3ton TXVs were NOT adjustable. Even my Hvac guy helping was surprised and hadn't seen a fixed valve before... Wow... So new valves were ordered from Danfoss and I have one in and its operating great! 40deg plates and pumping 45deg water all day long... Almost finished pex plumbing to the rooftop coil - this weekend I should have 3 zones up and running - got lots of fan wiring and 12v thermostats to wire in. I'll be driving bus to CA tomorrow night, excited to work her on the highway again
Pics of rooftop coil...

Also major purchase for bus as I finally got the generator I wanted - 8kw Powertech with a Perkins / Cat Diesel engine.. 1800 rpm continuous duty unit... AWESOME!!!!
Making brackets for a slide mount in my bay this weekend - as soon as I get the yellow beast in (500lbs) I can go on a trip boondocking!!! Rock!

Got it in my bay, but not mounted or hooked up yet - so excited...

I could use some input on creative ideas for a slide mechanism to hold this 500 pounds and it should be able to extend at least 3 feet. I was looking on forums for truck bed sliders and people making their own with skate bearings and Steel so I was toying with that kind of idea.

Those Joey beds would work best for what you're doing. There are used ones occasionally. More people use them in suburbans than trucks. I have no idea what the weight limits are. They should be just short of four feet wide and I'd guess about 6-7 feet long. I believe they slide on side rails, like a drawer. Seems like it would be perfect for your application.

those look similar to the air handlers I built for my zoned House system.. I used EEV's for mine so they can be controlled via computer.. I could vary the superheat and expansion and thus the capacity / load of the system by electronically adjusting the valve. unless your chiller has a variable inverter compressor or has a variable slide valve it will have trouble in Low demand situations..

ive never seen fixed mechanical valves.. every one of them i ever got was adjustable.. and dependong on the application... like in my last bus I had 3 evaporators on 1 compressor I placed a pressure regulator on the output to keep comnstant suction pressure across each coil..

40 degree plates should do you nicely.. though in really humid conditions you may want to run the plates down to 36-38 and pump 40-42 degree glycol to better yank the humidity.. in a bus I found humidity was a tough pull.. t onot over-cool it and still make it nice n dry.. / not clammy...

at a 36 degree plate you shouldnt send any liquid back to the compressor as long as your TxV doesnt open and dump into the coil...

fun stuff you are doing!!! Love it!!

The plates can be adjusted all the way to 24deg!! We had it way too cold at first. Doing 36-38deg is an easy adjustment. So far so good. I'll see how it does once all insulated and running a load with the zones...

I can't use a full size bed slider... I would have to build my own or find one 4ft X 4ft..
So I think it's gonna be a custom job

is it externally communicating? I run my system temperatures based on the load, anticipated load, sun load, humidity, and temperature...

the warmest you can get away with and be comfortable is the most efficient.. but that number changes... on some days a 45-50 degree plate temp is acceptable, other days 36-38 is where you want to be..

I can tell my system where I want it to ride... im guessing those chillers of yours could do the same..

Yeah, I can set the temp of the water output of chiller. This corresponds to what the coil temps will be in the exchangers +-deg... Once I run it full tilt with all zones I'll get a better idea of where I'll ride everything.
We are super dry here in Vegas so I'm betting I could run pretty cold coils. But I hear ya on finding the happy ground for efficiency and cooling factor...

in dry vegas you can run some pretty warm coils on those mild days... the warmer you run the coils the less load your outdoor condensers have and can run more efficiently..

when its dry you run warmer water without the risk of clammy interior unless you are making lots of humidity through cooking or showering...

a few summers back I drove my old monte carlo with a Crazy A/C out west and was able to dump 26 degrees at the vents (coil temp 21) before I started to ice up... it was incredible how well an A/C can work when it doesnt have the load of turning humidity to water!

You guys must be in a parallel bus conversion universe from the rest of us. In our rig, if it's too warm we open the windows. If it's too cool we close the windows.

Very impressive work you're doing!

On the generator slides, you might take a look at what Vlad did for his (epic!) slide-outs. Those slides were very well done IMHO and could be easily duplicated for your genny.

Nice build btw!

BTW, where did you get that genny, and, if it's not asking too much, for how much? We're getting ready to get our build, Heavy Fuel, back on track with a major shot of cash in the next six weeks and a genny like that is high on our priority list.

Suckers cost more than a lot of us spend on the whole conversion. I used to make parts for Powertech, they're right across the road from my old job.
That model is probably around ten grand.

Yeah, they are NOT cheap. The unit I got sells for around 9k new. This one has only 140hrs on it so I consider that pretty young or practically "new" considering the amount of hours these kind of engines can take. I got it half price used off a very well off guy that used it for his 5th wheel for camping.... Found ad in Vegas Craigslist and he was asking 5500.. I talked him down to 4400..

Now my other generator I was going to use is for sale!! I also have A 10kw whisper weld/generator by MQ Power - it runs at 3600 rpm though and I was about to put new injectors in it when I found this unit.. IT needed a bit of modifications to go in a bus. First off it's trailer mounted and would need welding transformer and gas tank removed after getting it out of the housing and putting on skids. Then a new air managed sound box... It has a Kubota d722 with around 5000 hrs.
If anyone feels up to that challenge and can handle 1gallon / hour for 10kw I'm selling it for $1800
