Re: Jacuzzi Bus IV

Black with flames eh... You mean like this?

Me and my roommate cut the roof off his 89 Ford Crown Vic yesterday and spraypainted flames on the hood. The car is such a heap, it's really only worth it's weight in scrap metal so we figured why not.

Re: Jacuzzi Bus IV

I forgot how much work is required to paint a bus. UGGGGGGGG!!!

i've been working a lot of hours at my real job, so only able to work on the bus part time. today i finished masking, sanding, and washing with mineral spirits. Tomorrow she's ready for paint.

should still have her all finished by the weekend if the weather holds out.

One of your next projects should be a short bus! That would definitely prove interesting.

Are you using Rust-Oleum by the way? And also, can I ask what you use when you're scrubbing it with Mineral Spirits? I've tried paper towels and regular terry towels for scrubbing Mineral Spirits on before painting, both of them leave behind little fibers and I can't seem to get it 100% clean.
Yes, i'm using rustoleam. i use heavy duty blue paper towels that i bought from home depot. They don't seem to leave any little fibers behind. I'll try to take a photo of the box tomorrow.

a short bus next eh? hmmm................

Re: Jacuzzi Bus IV

To flame or not to flame? I'm just not sure. On one hand, flames are exciting and make people stare,,,they are a real attention getter. But, if i just leave the bus black with shiny alluminum trim (there's lots of shiny trim under the masking tape.) it might look a bit more high class. HMMMMM.....i'm indecisive.

Today was a near perfect day to do pretty much anything outside, including paint. Mid 70's, sunny, just a slight breeze, not a cloud in the sky. This entire process is taking way more time than i thought it would, but it's looking nice. Tomorrow is supposed to be just as nice as today, will hopefully get the flames masked painted. The following day i can clearcoat if all goes as planned. Whoo hoo! The body on this bus is nearly perfect, this is a really nice bus!

a few photos from today:

Re: Jacuzzi Bus IV

i didn't notice before, but you have a lot less surface area to work with... seems as if there is more window area and you have the wheel well to work around... what are your plans with the flames? it would be awesome if you could get some of that dotted stuffs (like you see on comertial trucks) that looks like a picture to go on the windows to finish out flames... just a thought

Re: Jacuzzi Bus IV

i got the flames painted on the passeger side today. There are a few mistakes i need to go over with the airbrush. I really should have waited an extra day before putting the masking tape over my new paint. i pulled some paint off in a few places, but it's nothing that can't be easily corrected. I wish i was more patient!

i'm still not sure if flames are appropriate for this vehicle, but i happen to like flames. Should look real nice once the painting is finished, clearcoat applied, and all the masking material is removed. I think i'm still on schedule to have it completed this weekend.

Re: Jacuzzi Bus IV

So is there one last sanding of the bus before the clearcoat or do you just spray over the last paint coat? And don't worry Jason, it's not impatience it's zeal. I know because it has gotten me in trouble all my life. And as usual, your work looks great! Like you said, that is a really nice bus.

Re: Jacuzzi Bus IV

Looks awesome, jason. I like the way you continued the flames over the door.

Gotta do something with them big light colored wheels though. It would be nice if you could continue the flame motif on them. I would go with the same black as the body and maybe red/yellow lug nuts.

Re: Jacuzzi Bus IV

rims are painted now. I used duct tape to mask the tires and protect them from the overspray. Masking tape didn't seem to stick to the tires so good.

finished all the flames and touch-up painting today

finished clearcoating

just need to unmask everything and re-assemble the lights and she should be good to go.

forgot my camera today, so you'll have to wait till tomorrow to see pic's.

i left the windows alone. They are tinted from the factory, and i didn't want to paint over them.

photos to come!

Re: Jacuzzi Bus IV

Man its gonna look real nice. I'm sure next time around it will sell on e-bay.
How many gallons of paint you go through on a full size bus? And what type of setup are you using?

Say, wouldn't you wanna take a trip up north (way up north) for a weekend of painting?

Re: Jacuzzi Bus IV

i'm an american, i don't even know where to find BC on a map....j/k. You should buy a cheap paint sprayer, you'd surprise yourself at how good you are at painting.

It took about 1/2 gallon of primer

1.5 rolls of heavy duty paper towels

1 old t-shirt. My heavy duty paper towels were leaving behind little pieces of fuzz...never had this happen before, i guess they don't make em like they used to. but the cotton t-shirt worked really well for final "washing" before painting

Just a hair over 2 gallons of rustoleam commercial by the gallon black paint. IF i didn't already have 3 gallons, i prob could have made it work with 2, but on a project like this, what's another $30.00

less than 1 quart of yellow

less than 1 quart of red

1 gallon of paint thinner for washing the bus (it tipped over and spilled most of it's contents on the ground...oopsies) I'll be drinking that in my well water in a few months.

1 gallon of acetone for mixing with the rustoleam. I never mix mineral spirits with my rustoleam, i think the acetone is way way better..worth the extra $$

lots of blue tape and other masking material

Less than 1 gallon of clearcoat ($150/gallon eeek!)

1/2 box of latex gloves. latex gloves are your friend...actually, for painting the vinyl or nitrile alternatives (most hospitals/ambulances use the latter two now because of some peoples allergy to latex) work better because the paint thinner, acetone, etc doesn't eat through vinyl or nitrle. Latex gloves fit nicer though.

2 small foam paint brushes for doing touch-ups. Couldn't find my airbrush.

1/2 roll duct tape for masking tires
