ran it out of oil?? id ne really tuned to any wierd sounds or lower than normal oil pressure readings you get.. running a diesel out of oil can be seriously damaging to the engine if it actually ran any length of time with low oil pressure... if it was just off the stick you may be Ok.. however the fact it didnt start sounds like it was low enough the common rail wasnt getting enough oil pressure to operate the fuel injectors correctly...

Should have just been off the stick if he only had to add 3 gallons... don't those 466's hold like 30 quarts? Hopefully the engine is fine.
