5 speed non electronic transmission w od

Was there ever such a transmission built that was suitable for skoolies? I know that with gasoline engines the jump to 5 and 6 speed autos came with electronics.

The MD-3060 was used in non-electronic engine installations.

It did require a TPS on the engine.

School bus applications are generally limited to 5 forward gears. Some have had success unlocking 6th gear..

Yes. but I think the controller for a 3060 is well over a thousand dollars. Is there no mechanical 4sp + OD tyranny out there?

Not for our application.

If you want O/D you have the 2000/3000 series to choose from and they are all electronic.

MT-643 is mechanical and has a lockup torque converter but no O/D.

there was the 7 speed allison(hd40?? I think it was mainly military).. No O/D. but OD is just a term.. you just gear your driveline (through rear gears and tire size) to make the most of the gears you have.

the allison 653 was a 5 five speed non OD with lockup, however it simply added a granny gear to the 4 existing..

you can use thue newer electronic transmissions on mechanical engines.. the MD3060 and allison 1000 are 2 modern transmissions that can work nicely on mechanical engines and give you 6 speeds 2 of them being OD..

but yes you need the wiring asnd controllers..

many of the older allisons that had more than 4 gears are very tough to find these days.. and if you do they are expensive as they were used on the bigger heavy duty busses.. some being SAE #1 which is a large bell pattern...

I have heard(heard, not seen) of an OD mechanical allison transmission that was in coach use back in the 60-70's behind 2 stroke detroits.

Looking back through my bookmarks, it looks like the # is HT70.

Once again, this is an old transmission so finding someone who knows anything about them might be hard, let alone finding a transmission itself.

Only other thing I have to say about it is that it was a heavy duty transmission, and will likely have an sae 1 or larger flywheel housing, and won't easily work with most school buses.

The Allison MT-40 is 6 speed but again no overdrive. Does have lock up torque converter, and is all mechanical.

Good suggestions, all of them. The Mt-40 is a rare bird - found almost nothing online about it, so have to rule that one out. I tried searching for a 3060 tps to get an estimate of the cost but could not find one. Any suggestions for how to search for this?
