Allison 3000 unlocking 6th

Greetings all and thanks for looking...
I did google but all the info is years old.

Allison 3000 aparanntly has an unlockable 6th gear.

It seems you need an authorization letter from Allison to allow it to be performed. Is this still the case?

There are also entity’s online that offer a service to unlock when you send them the control module.
Is this the same as taking it to an Allison dealer?

I tried to skim through the porkchopsandwich thread but it is all over the place.

Is this still an option these days? Has anyone had any experience with this? Would you recommend it? Cost?

Any input appreciated.

Thanks,
Shay

I would love to know this as well, when we got our bus in May, and took it down the highway; saw it went to 5th and thats it! would have loved a 6th!

Then i did some research on the trans and read you could "unlock" 6th gear, yes!

The more I read the more my spirits were crushed with all the hoops you have to jump through and cash needed for a certified company to just plug into the control module and give me a 6th gear.

I have a school bus company near me (warren county NJ) and I plan on seeing if they have any info on an easy unlock. Maybe if they can ask if they do bulk for multiple members on here?

I would direct you to these threads. Try to post any questions you may have in there. That way we keep all information in those two threads.

Off the top of my head, Porkchop and Backwoods Wanderer have gone through the process and had success getting Allison to unlock 6th.

That's the same link I previously provided. I was trying to kill this thread and direct people to post information into the two already open threads.

Can't find how Porkchop did it, but Backwoods was denied like everyone else. If not for a creative dealer running a line of BS past Allison was lucky enough to get it done. We also know nothing about what bus he has or how old it is.

I think I see the easiest solution for getting the unlock from rereading the previous threads. All Allison uses to make a determination is the VIN of the bus. All I need is the VIN from a bus with 6th open. I send my computer in and have them spec it to "my bus" with the 6th VIN. Any cons to this idea?
