allison transmission differences

I am looking to know more about allison transmissions.

allison B300R ??
Found some info in 3000 series manual
Is there a list that explains the differences between all these transmissions?
is the 3020 part of these?

thks Steve,

I was just trying to see how the TCM would be interchangeable between several transmissions.
It seems that the gmc kodiak folks are doing a lot with these 5 to 6 speed conversions.

I talked to one of the shops that is doing the swaps with 1000 & 2000 series swaps/conversions and asked them if they could open up 6th on my 3060. They told me that the 3000 series is quite different and they do not work on them.

Not sure how relevant that is to your quest......

i've been watching public surplus for 5 years and finally i think a pair of transmissions just showed up that i'm interested in.

payson az has 2 new in box AT1545P transmissions. i see the P is for PTO, i read somewhere that the 1 is a lock up converter. the only thing that scares me is it says allison for DETROIT DIESEL.

is that the flange? SAE 2 or 3?

i want to know if it will fit a cummins 6bta

I didn't find much on the AT1545P. Some say it was the trany for the M35A3, while others say it's usually paired with the Cat 3116 6.6l. On another forum this Allison was not a transmission of choice, but like the 545 would be adequate. I didn't find any information related to the lockup.

the AT1545 was a Military only spec transmission.. I understand it has the same case (SAE 3) bell.. the Bell on the 545 isnt removable. im not sure which converter you would need for lockup. the TC-290 commonly found on the 545 wouldnt work on the 1545.

the advantage of the 1545 over the MT643 in a swap is that would be a direct swap in..

If the 1545 is military only I would assume it is geared lower.

im told its a 1:1. with a lockup converter..

supposedly its a different valve body and input shaft / drum that has the lockup actuator on it.. Ive not seen one in pieces, just talked to a guy at a transmission shop that had one come in on his bench and no one knew what to do with it, as it wasnt the norm.. so he learned about (and rebuilt it).. ironically i think he said it was brought in by a guy doing a skoolie.. (or a conversion in a motorhome)..

so.... is that a yes? i should bid? how would i find out about which TC? is my 6bta an SAE #3?

does that big number 2 stamped on the transmission mean something?

if you have an AT545 on your bus currently then you either are running an SAE2 to SAE3 adapter, or your engine is SAE3, I dont know much about the cummins.

its Possible the Military had something special built for them, but on my AT545 Case, the bell is not removable, so it seems unless the military had a special transmission case made for them then the 1545 would be an SAE3 bell.

im in the middle of a transmission swap on my T-444E as we speak. I cant take a pic of how my T-444E has the SAE2 to SAE3 adapter installed for a couple days as im on the trip to pick up my new transmission.. if you crawl underneath, and see that there are 2 concentric bolt patterns that your transmission is mounted to then you likely have an SAE2 to SAE3 Adapter installed.. SAE3 is smaller than SAE2, so an adapter ring can be installed in the bolt holes where an SAE2 transmission would fit and it adapts it to the smaller circle that is SAE3. s spacer is then installed behind the flexplate which moves it and the converter pilot hub out the distance of the adapter..

if this is your setup, then technically you can use either an SAE2 or SAE3 transmission as you can remove the adapter and the hub spacer and install an SAE2 transmission.

if you are swapping to an allison 1000 / 2000 variant then that transmission can be built with the bell that will fit your engine.. which is how im getting mine. rather than rempve adapters and spacers, i chose to have my trans made with the SAE3 bell.. (1000/2000 have swappable bellhousings).

i did just confirm on cummins quickserve that i have the SAE3 housing.

It would be interesting to see if your housOmg is dorect sae 3 or if it was adapted down.. if it was adapted down then it opens up a lot of other transmission possibilities .. if it's directly sae 3,then you have to find transmissions with that bell or replace the bell on one. I think the 643 requires sae 2 and can't be bell swapped.

All the navistar motors I've seen used sae2 housings and then adapter rings . Maybe Cummins does too.. would make the most sense.

it appears you can have your choice of flywheel housings.

it looks like the flywheel housing bolts onto the enginblock in a "B" pattern. the trans side can be any SAE number. just depends on the part number.

1545 is just a 545 with lock up clutch in the converter in 3rd and 4th gears. They were used when the m35's were repowered with cat engines in the 90's. Gearing is the same between the two. The P is for pto provision on the right side of the trans.

Fairly certain all of the at series allisons have the sae3 housing. If you are currently equipped with an at545 the at1545 should bolt up as a direct replacement. You can always take a tape measure to what you have and verify with specs that are easily found via google.

Crazycal has 2 of these that he bought. Last I talked to him they were both still waiting to be installed.

Reason the ad has detroit diesel mentioned is likely because the two companies were merged by gm at one point in time and the tag on the box likely says detroit diesel-allison. Gm has since sold both companies so they're split now. The secretary that was tasked with the listing probably didn't know that and just listed what they saw.

I'd see if you can get any pictures from the town in order to verify that they have what is listed, but at the price they currently have it at I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.

Military trans

I own a few M939 5-tons that use the Allison automatic- MT654CR . The CR on the end is for close ratio, so pulls nice, not much top end. Everything else is very standard. If you have the NSN number for the item, you can usually find the TM's, which will have more info than you could want. Trans on mine is fully mechanical.

I'm running the Michelin 39" ZXL tires and top-out at 60 mph with the cummins 6CTA backed by MT654CR

The 1545 is for the deuce and half's. The 5 tons, as you said, use the mt series trans, which already have lockup. Does your 5 ton have a 2 speed transfer case? If they do, that's probably why the close ratio trans was selected.
