Bluebird tachometer

Hello all. Does anyone here have any information on the tachometer in a Bluebird? Specifically a 1996 bird. I get no movement or reading at all from mine. All of the other dash gauges are working fine. Are these electronic or mechanical with a cable? Where on the engine does the system start? Are there any common troubleshooting procedures I can run through to figure out what's going on? I'm taking the bus to a mechanic today for fluid service and I'm going to get a quote from them on fixing it, but if this is something I can figure out myself then I'll give it a go. I'm reasonably proficient with tools and I can trace and test simple wiring issues with a meter, but in the case of the tach on a bus, I don't even know where to start.

Re: Bluebird tachometer

check on the aternater and if its a deco ,y will have one red wire and just be low that big red one,u should have a black and a white wire ,,,it would be white over black check them, that the way they are on GM b/b flat nose 94 to 2000

u will also have another black wire on the aternater next to the eng side see if thats in place,,that a ground wire..

Thanks Keith, I'll trace those back this weekend and see what I can find.

Re: Bluebird tachometer

I have an 1994 Bluebird with an 8.3 cummins pusher. When I bought it it had a new delco alternator. At first it didn't seem to charge right and had no readings on the tach. After reading up on the internet I found out that with that particular alternator and wiring setup there was a small jumper on the alternator that had to be cut. When I did that and brought up the engine speed past a slow idle the tach started working and the alternator put out the proper voltage. Everytime I start up I still have to pick up the rpm's a little past slow idle and then everything works fine. Might be worth looking into. I believe I got the info from the delco website. Good luck, Gary
