brake light switch please help

hello
i bought my bus a few months ago, the brake lights were working fine, then they stopped working. the fuse has power but the lights themselves dont they are both grounded. someone told me to change the brake light switch. all the other lights are working fine. so can anyone tell me where the switch might be located? its a 88 international 7.3 navistar with air brakes. any input would be great thanks in advance. little angel

Re: brake light switch please help

You can order not only the brake light switch, but shoes, drums, etc all online if you dont have a truck parts house near you. i don't have a link in my head at the moment... shoes which are now mostly made in china, are only 15-25.00, n most drums are a hundred bucks or so. switch will be cheap.. you can also get your treadle valve, and other things pretty inexpensive online. pm me if you want me to look in my links for an online place.

My bus advice is.....

Go to a local school district bus shop and get some bus information. Before going to shop, take some important
stuff with you. Make a list of your bus questions, note book with pencil, camera if available, $10-20 CASH for mechanic's time and information. Drive your bus to shop if possible. Get familiar with your bus about every aspect. In your post you did not mention your kind of brakes as air or hydraulic. There are usually not dumb questions, but there are questions with no answers. Take many pics of your bus, and look at every part of the bus.
Try to find a local mentor to guide you about your bus. It is up to you. Frank

Re: brake light switch please help

in original post, bus has air brakes...
most school dist mechanics might help. pretty much all brake components are online, unless one has the very old triangle brake cam instead of the s cam setup. And with the axle number, etc, which is generally posted on the mfg sticker, truck parts houses can look up the brake parts pretty easy.. like my thomas, but also the mfg will also tell you what you got when you call the parts guy with your information. Brake parts for mine were gotten both from the parts house, and also the thomas guys told me which shoes i needed.

if the light switch is defective, i would just buy one online.

Re: brake light switch please help

thank you very much, i found that theres two brake light switches above the brake petal. neither one is getting power so im thinking thats my problem right there. im in tucson and got an international dealership right up the road, i dont think the switches are super spending. thanks again for your time. today im working on getting the kingpins replace, which is turning out to be a pain. thanks again and have a great day. little angel
