Engine and trans repower

Last week I visited a guy near Portland. Or. who changed the engine in his 1982 BB bus. The bus was powered by a 6.9 Int. diesel with a 5 speed. The new/used engine is a 5.9 Cummins and an allison auto trans. The Cummins has had the fuel turned up, turbo changed to larger unit, trans shifts modified, intercooler modified, and exhaust piping with removal of muffler. The rear axle gears will be changed to a 4:10 from a 6:30. This bus also has a wood burning stove.

Re: Engine and trans repower

What did he do about motor mounts? Was he able to find factory parts to do so or did he have to fabricate? I love seeing the fabricated mounts people come up with...some truly are beautiful pieces.

Engine install

The man who did all the work, works as a mechanic in a truck shop, but works on all buses. A wrecked bus was purchased and all the parts were on hand.
The wrecked bus was a Int bus also but with a Cummins. Int bus makers give the new buyer a choise of many engines. Because large engines are very interchangeable, changing engines is not a tough task. Big over the road engines may require some front suspension changes. Frank
