Question Engine/tranny combo

Hey all... I searched a bit, but didn't want to comment on an old thread. Also, I apologize in advance for not being much of a gearhead. I was just wondering what a good, all-purpose engine/transmission combination would be. The rigs I've been shopping lately have mostly been the T444e, Cat3126 and a couple DT466. I've seen some Allison transmissions, but no specifics on which tranny models are in use. Anyone know what to look for in conjunction with these engines? We plan on doing all types of driving: highway, boondocking, mountains, flats. Just want to know if there's anything I should avoid.

Avoid the cliffs if at all possible. Also water hazards, although buses do float well for a short period of time.

According to popular theory on this site the T444e and DT466 are preferred. Cat is ok if the deal is right but maintenance and parts are reportedly high.

Nearly any transmission is preferred over the Allison 545 which is most common and possibly the most avoided transmission. They do work well if you've got a good transmission and you take regular care of it. Complaints are no lockers and free wheeling on downhill.

hahahaha thanks, I'll keep that in mind (about the cliffs and such)! It seems a lot of these sellers don't tell you what transmission model is in the bus (online listings, anyway).

have them take a pic of the drivers side of the trans. a 545 has 2 threaded bolt holes in the side of the bell housing. the 643 has 4 in a square on the bell housing. if you search and look at images you can see the difference. good luck

Of course, these are the older ones. Newer buses have 5 and 6 speed transmissions.
