How do I find the proper mechanic?

I have had various lights come on and off while driving from point A to point B. We haven't had our 2000 GMC BlueBird for a week yet, but we want to have it checked out prior to taking a long road trip. What kind of mechanic should I be looking for that would work on a school bus and know what they are doing?

We are in Des Moines, IA right now if anyone has any recommendations.

A quick Google search with engine make and mechanic should turn up something. If you don't know anything about engines, I would say go to a dealer... They are overpriced, but in general I don't know of too many taking advantage of people. If you're a bit savvy, find a local guy and give him a shot... My corner garage will work on mine if needed (I walked over and asked) I have a 5.9 Cummins and according to the mechanic it's about 100% easier to work on than a pick up truck.
